KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Tata Motors filed a patent for the Twin Cylinder tech
- Offers more practical boot space
- More Tata cars to embrace this feature in future
Tata Motors made headlines when they launched the Tata Altroz CNG. While nothing was different with a car being offered with CNG, the groundbreaking highlight was the 'Twin-Cylinder Tech' as the company likes to call it. Tata Altroz came to the market with a price tag of Rs 7.55 lakh to Rs 10.55 lakh (ex-showroom). But now, Tata Tiago and Tigor are ready to embrace this feature.
But what exactly is it and how it counters the major pain point in a CNG car ownership? Read more to find out.
Tata Tiago, Tigor To Get Twin CNG Cylinders
What exactly Tata did with the Altroz CNG was that rather than putting a single big cylinder of 60 liters capacity, it placed two 30 liters cylinders under the boot floor. This substantially increases the boot space by keeping the floor flat. Although it sounds simple, there are certain obstacles in the way that Tata managed to overcome.

Now Tata Motors have confirmed that the Tata Tiago and Tigor will soon have twin cylinders as well. The company has already filed the patent for the same and more vehicles will be making use of this tech. However, Altroz CNG was designed keeping in mind this inclusion, the Tiago and Tigor are built on the older X0 platform. Making this change in these cars will be a challenge and would be interesting to see how they jump this roadblock.
Is Nexon CNG On The Cards?
As it is already known that the 1.5-liter diesel engine will most likely not be able to withstand the next phase of emission norms which is only a couple of years or so away. After that, the replacement for the diesel engine will be the CNG set-up as cleared by the company. So, moving forward, a Nexon CNG has a very high probability.
VERDICT- Since boot space is a major pain point for CNG vehicle owners, Tata found a way around it. So, it only makes sense to give this feature to other cars in the portfolio as well. Also, Tata Punch CNG is also nearing its launch timeline to counter the Hyundai Exter, which is being launched with a CNG right from the start.
