Toyota Yaris Cross Unveiled; The Yaris We Want in India

Toyota had planned to unveil the Yaris Cross at the 2020 Geneva Motorshow but the show was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Toyota has now unveiled the Yaris Cross online and shared some details we need to know. Specially developed for the European markets, Yaris Cross will grab the empty space below the CH-R and the manufacturing will be done in France. No, there aren't any plans of it coming to India yet but it looks cool enough for us to get it here in our news section.

Toyota Yaris Cross sits on the brand's TNGA (GA-B) platform which has been designed for compact cars and SUVs. The design has been inspired by the CH-R and, recently revealed, Toyota Harrier. The upright nose and a small grille in the centre with high set headlights give it a tall and bulky stance. The accentuated wheel arches with black cladding all around reassure its 'Cross' moniker and the shoulder line merges with the C-pillar. The rear profile sports blacked-out elements near the taillight assembly and a blue-highlighted Toyota badge, given its Hybrid powertrain, sits in the centre of the taillights.

The black cladding all around and 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels make it feel very robust and tough. A very unique quirk is the 'Yaris Cross' badge on either rear door sills. The all-black roof and integrated rear spoiler give it a tapering roof look despite not compromising on inner headroom. The Yaris Cross measures 4180mm in length, 1765 mm in width and 1560 in height whereas the wheelbase at 2560mm is identical to Yaris hatchback.

Coming to the interiors of the Yaris Cross, then it is all new and very high quality, Toyota says! A large, free-standing touchscreen takes the centre stage which supports both Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Other features include semi-digital driver's console, auto AC (JDM will get dual-zone AC), capsule-shaped AC vents, three-spoke steering wheel with steering mounted controls, ambient and footwell lighting, drive modes etc. More deets on the interior features will be shared on the launch.

Coming to the powertrain, Toyota has offered the Yaris Cross with just one engine option which is a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual, direct-shift CVT and hybrid system. The engine, that produces 114 bhp powers the front wheel only whereas the hybrid motor powers the rear wheels in case of lack of traction making it an electric AWD. Toyota will launch the Yaris Cross this year and it will compete with cars like Nissan Juke and second-gen Renault Captur globally. Do you want it here in India as well?
