Ford and Mahindra entered into a joint venture last year and the two brands plan to co-develop products to be launched in the Indian market. As per the recent updates, both the companies plan to launch a C-SUV in their portfolio. Mahindra is believed to be working on the second-gen Mahindra XUV500, which is codenamed as 'Mahindra W601'. The upcoming 2021 Ford C-SUV W605 will be based upon the W601 and will be launched in the Indian market after the W601.
As per the Dr. Pawan Goenka, CEO and MD, Mahindra, the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the Ford C-SUV W605 will be powered by Mahindra's 2.0-L mStallion T-GDi petrol engine. This engine churns out 190 HP and 380 Nm of maximum torque. Mahindra recently unveiled this new petrol engine at Auto Expo 2020. In addition to this, the W601 and W605 SUVs will also be powered by a 2.0-L diesel engine.
However, it is worth noting that the Ford W605 will feature a shorter wheelbase and length in addition to other minor chassis modifications for better driving dynamics. The Ford W605 will be very different in terms of styling and interior layout when compared to the W601. As per the plan, Mahindra's W601 will be more VFM and comfortable which makes it an ideal choice of vehicle for family usage while Ford's W605 will offer better quality and driving dynamics.
As per a Mahindra official, JV projects with Ford have been delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The launch timeline of the W601 and W605 has also been affected by the same. It is expected that the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will hit the showrooms by mid-2021 and the Ford W605 will be launched a year after that.
