Upcoming Ather Scooter Details
The government of India has become strict about EV norms. The new battery norms from MoRTH are going to be applicable from April'23. Hence, EV makers have started testing budget-friendly products. One such maker is Ather which is developing a more economical e-scooter. As the norms are getting tight, affordability is increasing in the EV segment. Opposed to what most e-scooters were some time back; most EVs are now becoming budget-friendly. One such example is the Ola S1 Air which is aimed to stand by the strict battery norms. Additionally, the subsidy schemes will end by 31st March 2024; hence, the need for affordable products has increased.
So, what is the fuss about the new e-scooter from Ather? Spied for the first time, the new scooter looks like it will be a cheaper variant. Most probably it will ditch the aluminum frame chassis. This shall be replaced by a tubular frame which is easy to make in terms of cost. Additionally, the battery size will be reduced, hence, less range. Ather might also remove some features to make it even more accessible to customers. Mind you, Ather recently updated the Ather 450X Gen 3 with new updates. However, this upcoming e-scooter will be different than the current siblings. With that said, we expect that Ather might introduce it by the end of this year. Maybe a riding range of up to 100 km is what Ather is eyeing to achieve. Apart from this, this new scooter will obviously be lighter than the current models. It'll be interesting to see how Ather places it alongside its current lineup.
Verdict
Rivals like Ola & TVS iQube are slowly shifting towards affordability. The reasons are clear; strict norms and increasing input costs. Hence, a low-cost scooter makes more sense. We expect that when this scooter will debut; it'll be placed under the Rs 1 lakh bracket for sure. Rest, we will wait until something official is unveiled.
