Before we begin with the Upcoming Compact SUVs, here is brief memorabilia about how the compact-SUV segment gained traction in India. It was mid-2013 when Ford launched the Ford Ecosport in India at a very attractive price and it disrupted the market. Then came the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in 2016 which set the sales chart on fire followed by the Tata Nexon in 2017 which did splendidly well for Tata Motors. Hyundai and Mahindra also joined the party with the Venue and the XUV 300 respectively in 2019. But, now its 2020 and we have a few more players lined-up to compete in this hot-selling segment. 1. Nissan Magnite; Expected Starting Price - Rs. 5.25 Lakhs
Nissan Motor India will launch its first compact-SUV in India this year and it could be a turnaround for the Japanese carmaker in the country. The upcoming Nissan compact-SUV will be called the Nissan Magnite and it will be based on the CMF-A+ platform that also underpins the Renault Triber. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will churn around 100 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.
The upcoming Nissan Magnite will be loaded with features up to the brim. It will get some first-in-segment features like a 360-degree parking camera with other premium add-ons like a massive touchscreen infotainment system with connected car-tech, sunroof, etc. As per sources, Nissan Magnite will be launched in August 2020 and will be priced very aggressively with a starting price of Rs. 5.25 lakhs for the manual and under Rs. 6 lakhs, Ex-showroom for the CVT variant.
2. Kia Sonet; Expected Starting Price - Rs. 6.99 Lakhs
Kia Motors is buoyed by the success of its debut product Kia Seltos and the Carnival MPV. The South Korean carmaker will now launch its third product in India and it is the Kia Sonet compact-SUV. The concept version of Kia Sonet was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and it looks damn gorgeous. Kia Sonet is based on the Hyundai Venue's platform and will borrow its powerplant from it.
It will be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, and a powerful 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. All the powertrain options might come with both manual as well as automatic transmissions. The SUV will get Kia's UVO connected car technology, a large 10.24-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a sunroof, etc. It will be launched in August this year with prices ranging between Rs. 6.99 lakhs - Rs. 12 lakhs, Ex-showroom.

3. Renault Kiger (Renault HBC); Expected Starting Price - Rs. 6 Lakhs
Renault has enjoyed a fair amount of success with its affordable Renault Triber MPV and Kwid hatchback and it was the only carmaker in 2019 to register positive YoY growth. The French carmaker will soon launch the Renault Kiger (Renault HBC) compact-SUV in India and it is also based on the CMF-A+ platform. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will churn around 100 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.
The Renault Kiger compact-SUV will get a distinctive look and will be loaded with of creature-comfort features like an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, fully digital instrument cluster, sunroof and might even get cruise control too. It will be launched in October 2020 with price ranging between Rs. 6 lakhs - Rs. 10 lakhs, Ex-showroom.
4. Mahindra Thar 4x4 SUV; Expected Starting Price - Rs. 10 lakhs
Mahindra was about to launch the new-generation 2020 Mahindra Thar SUV in India in Q1 of 2020 but due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the launch has been delayed. The new-gen Mahindra Thar will get a host of upgrades over its predecessor. It will retain its boxy SUVish design but will get new add-ons like LED headlamps, LED DRLs, LED tail-lights and sporty looking 5-spoke alloy wheels. The 2020 Thar will get a new dashboard layout with many creature-comfort features like a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear parking camera, a front-facing second row of seats and even a sunroof.
The new-gen Thar will be powered by Mahindras tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel engine that will churn out 140 bhp and 320 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It will also get off-road aids like a 4x4 system with a low-range gearbox. Mahindra might offer the new Thar with a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol unit too that will deliver around 190bhp and 380Nm of torque and the company might also introduce an automatic gearbox with it at a later stage. The 2020 Thar is now expected to be launched around June 2020 with prices between Rs. 10 lakhs - Rs. 12 lakhs, Ex-showroom.
5. Toyota Vitara Brezza; Expected Starting Price - Rs. 8.5 Lakhs
As a part of Toyota-Suzuki Alliance, Toyota has launched the rebadged Maruti Suzuki Baleno as Toyota Glanza in 2019 and now the Japanese carmaker is prepping-up to enter the sub-four-metre segment in India by launching the rebadged Vitara Brezza. Toyota will launch the rebadged Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza as Toyota Brezza (will be renamed later) in India in late 2020.
Toyota's compact-SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that churns out 105 PS of power and 138 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. Toyota will tweak the looks of its compact-SUV to give it a unique identity distinct from Maruti's Brezza. It will also get features like a touchscreen infotainment system, spacious cabin, etc. It will be launched in India in late 2020 in the price bracket of Rs. 8 lakhs - Rs. 11 lakhs, Ex-showroom.
