Vehicle Registration Renewal Fee to Be Hiked from Next Fiscal

As per a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the fee for renewal of registration certificates of vehicles over 15 years of age will be increased from April 1, 2022, onwards. 

The latest decision from the Ministry is in line with the Governments increased focus on phasing out of the old vehicles in order to tighten the grip on the ever-rising pollution levels. The recently issued notification states that the updated rules will be known as the Central Motor Vehicles (Twenty Third Amendment) Rules, 2021.

With the new rules coming into effect, vehicle owners will be liable to multiple times higher fees for the re-registration of vehicles that are more than 15 years old. Currently, the fee to renew the registration of a car that is more than 15 years old is Rs 600. From the next fiscal, the fee will be hiked to Rs 5,000. Meanwhile, the fee for re-registering a two-wheeler that is more than 15 years old will be increased from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000. Also, the registration renewal fee for important bikes and cars will be Rs 10,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively.

The cost of issuing a new registration certificate right now is Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000 for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, respectively. To obtain a fitness certificate for 15-year old vehicles, one will have to shell out Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 7,500 for four-wheelers. Also, the fee for conducting a fitness test will be Rs 400 for a manual transmission-equipped two-wheeler and Rs 500 for an automatic transmission-equipped two-wheeler.

The same fee for a manual transmission-equipped four-wheeler will be Rs 800 and for an automatic transmission-equipped vehicle, it will be Rs 1,000. Also, the re-registration of a 15-year-old vehicle will have to be mandatorily carried out every 5 years. In case of a delay in the registration renewal, one will have to pay a fine of Rs 300 per month. Also, an additional penalty of Rs 50 per day will be levied once the registration certificate has expired.  Another fine of Rs 200 will be levied in case the new registration certificate is a smart card.
