Volkswagen Entry-Level EV Global Debut In 2027

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • This car is not to be confused with the production version of the ID.2All concept car that will come out in 2026.
  • Together, these cars fall under the new electric small car umbrella.
  • The ID.2All Concept will be revealed globally in 2026.
  • The concept version of the entry-level electric car will be shown in March.

In global markets, Volkswagen has been known for its compact cars like the Beetle, the Polo, and the Golf. The German car maker is now planning to usher into the electric era with a new entry-level electric car, which will make its global debut in 2027. However, a concept version will also be shown in March 2025, as a glimpse of what we can expect in the future.

Volkswagen Entry-Level Electric Car Details

From the teaser slide, we can see that the upcoming entry-level EV will feature a slightly muscular stance with significantly flared wheel arches. It will also feature small rectangular headlights with a modern DRL signature, and a black grille panel. It also gets slim DRLs placed on the bumper, and we can expect a significant amount of that area to be blanked-out. We can expect an overall smooth, minimalist design language.

The entry-level Volkswagen electric car will be smaller than the production-version of the ID.2All. Both these cars are part of the new electric small car umbrella planned by Volkswagen, and these cars will be built on an improved version of the MEB all-electric platform.

We can also expect the entry-level EV to feature a single electric motor powering the front wheels. Volkswagen is targeting a price range of 20,000 Euros, which converts to Rs 18.16 lakh (ex-showroom), which raises questions over its arrival in the Indian market. The production-version of the ID.2All will go on sale globally by 2026. However, this car is also unlikely to make it to India, at least for the near future.

In the Indian context of things, reports suggest that Volkswagen is working on a localized all-electric platform, which could possibly spawn off a compact SUV. However, the expected timeline remains unspecified as of now.

Verdict

Volkswagen has been working on the premium EV front globally for quite some time now. However, it now looks set to compete against other car makers by developing small, affordable EVs, which will also help it penetrate into smaller markets.
