The luxury MPV market is experiencing increased popularity in current times. The segment welcomes an iconic brand with the introduction of the Volvo EM90, set to debut initially in China. Interestingly, this new MPV is an electric mover, which is something still not very common in the segment. While Volvo has a reputation and a place amongst top manufacturers, let's see how will it fare against the competition.
Volvo EM90 MPV: Luxury And Electric
The Volvo EM90 showcases a fusion of traditional boxy MPV proportions and the stylish details characteristic of the Swedish automaker. Its front end stands out with the distinctive Thor's Hammer headlamps and a sizable closed-off grille, adorned with an illuminated logo.On the side, it boasts a chic and straightforward design, featuring blacked-out pillars, expansive glass surfaces, and the convenience of sliding rear doors. The vehicle rides on either 19- or 20-inch wheels, contributing to its overall aesthetic.
Notably, the rear design of the EM90 stands out with a fresh interpretation of vertical taillamps that extend both above and below the rear windscreen base. This unique positioning emphasizes the MPV's width, with a chrome accent on the middle horizontal section adding a touch of sophistication.

Interior And Features
Volvo has meticulously designed the EM90 for buyers aiming to serve both family and executive needs within the same form factor. The 6-seater configuration includes lounge seats in the middle row, featuring powered adjustments, massage functions, heating, ventilation, and built-in tables.
Middle-row occupants enjoy additional luxuries such as a spacious panoramic sunroof, a roof-mounted 15.6-inch screen with fold-down capability and tilt adjustment for optimal viewing angles. Controls for rear windows, blinds, and individual climate zones are conveniently placed on the door, likely touch-operated, with a small TFT display.
The driver's experience in the Volvo EM90 is characterized by a simple and minimalist dashboard, hosting two displays without a central control panel. The digital driver's display is presented on a widescreen unit, complemented by a sizable 15.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment and various car functions. The vehicle incorporates connected car technology and a premium 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
The center console, extending from the armrest to the dash, provides zonal separation for front passengers. It features a beautifully crafted drive-selector with a glass finish, cupholders, and a wireless charging pad.
Volvo EM90: Powerplant Underneath
Built on a new platform, the Volvo EM90 is equipped with a 116 kWh battery powering a single electric motor generating 272 PS. This configuration enables a swift 0-100 kmph acceleration in 8.3 seconds. The electric MPV, introduced in the Chinese market, boasts a claimed range of 738 km based on the CLTC (China Light duty vehicle Test Cycle). Additionally, the EM90 supports ultra-fast charging, allowing the battery to reach 80 percent capacity in approximately 30 minutes when charged from 10 percent.
While the Toyota Vellfire receives a good response, Volvo is highly likely to bring this MPV to India. However, since it is an all-electric vehicle, Volvo might hold it for some time and launch only after analyzing the receptibility for it.
