With rising fuel prices, many vehicle owners are opting for CNG vehicles, due to lower running costs than their petrol siblings. The CNG kits in BS-VI vehicles can help you save a lot of money on fuel, which will ultimately help in low running and owning costs. To date, CNG retrofitting has been limited to vehicles that meet the BS-IV emission standard. But soon the BS-VI petrol car owner can fit CNG in their vehicles.
Now, a draft notification has been issued by the ministry of road transport to establish emission and other standards for such CNG retro fitment in BS-VI vehicles. At present, only BS-VI emission-compliant vehicles are sold in the country, and the requirement for this retro fitment felt right at this time. For instance, its mandatory for commercial vehicles plying in Delhi to have CNG.

On this move by the government, transport expert Anil Chhikara said This is a very positive move by the government as CNG as fuel will bring huge relief to common people from the high expenditure on petrol. Second, this is a green fuel. Since the government has proposed the retro fitment of CNG kits in vehicles of engine capacity up to 1500 CC, it will cover all cars and also some of the SUVs.
The CNG fitment in BS-VI vehicles will be allowed for cars with a gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, according to the ministry, and type approvals for vehicles refitted with CNG kits which will be valid for a duration of three years. This type of approval will be renewed every three years.

As per industry insiders, the cost of CNG kits in BS-VI cars might be around Rs 50,000 per vehicle, but customers will quickly recuperate their expenditure due to decreased fuel expenses.
