Jeep Meridian vs Tata Safari - Price
The all-new Jeep Meridian now starts at Rs 24.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 36.49 lakh. In contrast, the Tata Safari starts at Rs 15.49 lakh, with the top trim costing Rs 26.79 lakh after several different variants. One advantage of owning the Safari over the Meridian is the availability of captain seats in the second row, along with a special all-black dark edition that offers a distinctive personality.
The closest variants that are perfect for comparison are the Longitude Plus from the Meridian, costing Rs 27.50 lakh, and the Accomplished + Dark Edition (AT) from the Safari, priced at Rs 26.69 lakh. Now, let's begin the actual comparison.
Jeep Meridian vs Tata Safari - Dimensions
The Meridian is a D-segment vehicle based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass. Before the recent updates, it was a direct competitor to the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. However, with its new pricing, comparing it with the Safari - a C-segment car - has also become relevant. Lets check out the dimensions in a table to better understand the size.
Dimensions | Jeep Meridian | Tata Safari |
Length | 4769 mm | 4668 mm |
Width | 1859 mm | 1922 mm |
Height | 1689 mm | 1795 mm |
Wheelbase | 2782 mm | 2741 mm |
Ground Clearance | 203 mm | 205 mm |
Boot Space | 170 L (After 3rd row up) | Less than 100 L (After 3rd row up) |
Engine Specification
Both of these large SUVs feature the same 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine developed by Fiat. However, the Jeep uses a 9-speed automatic transmission, while Tata employs a 6-speed torque converter. The engine power figures are identical, and both cars have a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup.
- 170 Hp
- 350 Nm of torque
- Jeep Meridian fuel efficiency 16.25 kmpl (ARAI).
- Tata Safari fuel efficiency 16.14 kmpl (ARAI).
Features Comparison
This is a intersting part because the Longitude Plus is the second variant in the lineup and the Accomplished + Dark Edition is the second top, so in terms of features, Safari is miles ahead. Let's with the interior, where Tata Safari is equipped with:
- Dual zone automatic ac
- Panaromic sunroof with mood lightning
- Front ventialted seats
- Power adjustable driver seat
- 10.25 Inch digital driver's display
- 12.25 Inch HARMAN infotainment touchscreen
- R19 alloy wheels
- Air purifier
- Gesture controlled power tailgate
- 7 airbags
- 5 speakers and 4 tweeters
- Level 2 ADAS
Jeep Meridian Longitude Plus features:-
- Analog meter
- 10.1 Inch Infotainment Touchscreen
- Panaromic Sunroof
- 6-speakers apline sound system
- Dual zone climate control
- Rain sensing wipers
- 60-40 split seats
- R18 alloy wheels
- Auto dimming IRVM
Clearly, the Tata Safari wins in the features comparison, while the Jeep Meridian falls short, as it is the second base variant. Additionally, it costs more than the Safari and still doesnt offer features like a powered tailgate, digital drivers display, and powered drivers seat. So, if you want a more premium car than go for the Meridian, but if you want the top features in your vehicle, than go with the Safari, if you budget is around Rs 30 lakh.

Verdict
The new pricing of the Jeep Meridian could pose a challenge for the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700, as those looking to buy a large SUV with an impeccable road presence now find it available at a cost-effective price. However, the market presence of the Safari and XUV700 is strong, and buyers are often drawn to these vehicles because of the status associated with them. In contrast, Jeep is losing its status value, and with the drop in starting price, the special feeling of owning a Jeep has also diminished. These factors contribute in creating a bad image of the automaker, which also counts in the purchasing decision.
