Mahindra Thar Roxx: The 5-Door Mahindra Thar or the Thar Roxx is now between us. The elongated Thar comes with some major improvements that make it a more practical vehicle than its 3 door sibling. However, the new Thar retains most of its design elements, it gets a new and more aggressive grille, and company-fitted LED DRLs. These design elements enhance the visual appeal of the lifestyle vehicle. In this article, we will be primarily covering what we think about the new Mahindra Thar Roxx. Interior: A Worthy Transition in Comfort and Practicality

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is undoubtedly a great transition in comfort and practicality. Now you get an ample amount of space inside the cabin, providing impressive legroom and headroom. The Thar Roxx offers a dual-tone interior colour scheme with white upholstery, black leatherette padding and copper stitching on the dashboard which looks premium and upmarket. Also, there is an independent armrest for the co-passenger seat that significantly increases comfort during long journeys.

Coming at the rear cabin, I can say that now there is no more space issue. I stand 6 feet tall and when I sat on the rear seat, I had a decent size of legroom and headroom left for me which is a major improvement. Because of the 90-degree opening of rear doors, ingress and egress have become so effortless. Additionally, the rear door handles are positioned on the C-Pillar and there is a decent size of boot space, having a capacity of 447 litres (normal) and 644 litres (up to the roof).

Design: Improved Visual Appeal

At first sight, the all-new Thar Roxx looks just like an elongated Thar, but some major design changes enhance its overall visual appeal. Retaining the iconic boxy design and a similar front fascia, it gets a new six-slat grille and company-fitted C-shaped LED DRLs.

In addition to this, there is a longer wheelbase which is obvious to accommodate the additional doors. For some, the all-new Thar is a great visual upgrade over the 3-door version while others say that it dilutes the compact characteristic of the original Thar. However, opinions on design are always based on individual preferences and we won't say anything in this regard.

My opinion on design: Personally, I liked the overall design language of the Thar Roxx. It gets a more aggressive stance now which looks really amazing.

Mahindra Thar Roxx Features

The Mahindra Thar Roxx bursts all the myths that the Thar is just a basic vehicle that lacks advanced features. The 5-door Thar gets a tech-loaded dash that houses dual 10.25-inch displays (one for the infotainment and another as a digital driver's display). Other features of the Thar Roxx include rear AC vents, automatic AC, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, ventilated seats and keyless entry with push start/stop button.

In terms of safety, the Thar ensures comprehensive safety with features such as six airbags as a standard, a 360-degree camera, electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and an ADAS level 2 suite.

My opinion: The new safety suite and set of features make Thar a modern vehicle that helps it rival some of its feature-loaded rivals such as the Creta and the Jimny.

Mahindra Thar Roxx: Engine

Mechanically, things are largely similar as the 3 door Thar. The all-new Thar Roxx gets the same engine options which include a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The turbo petrol unit on offer generates 162 PS of power and 330 Nm of torque while the diesel unit produces 152 PS of power and 330 Nm of torque. The above power figures are for the manual transmission options.

Power figures for the AT trims:

  • 2.0-litre Turbo-petrol: 177 PS and 380 Nm
  • 2.2-litre diesel: 175 PS and 370 Nm

My opinion: The Thar has always been a powerful lifestyle vehicle and the Thar Roxx is no exception because it continues to offer both petrol and diesel powertrains. These powerhouses are potent enough to overshadow competitors such as the Maruti Jimny and the Force Gurkha.

Thar Roxx Off-road Capability

The all-new Mahindra Thar Roxx continues to be a powerful off-roader. It is based on the same tough ladder frame chassis. Some off-roading traits are also the same such as the 4x4 drivetrain with a low-range transfer case and mechanical locking rear differential that allows the Thar to conquer any type of terrain. However, because of the longer wheelbase, the approach, departure and break-over angles are not as impressive as the 3-door Thar.

Verdict

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a bold evolution of its 3-door predecessor, offering improved comfort, space, and features. Its aggressive design, advanced safety suite, and powerful engine options make it a compelling choice for both urban and off-road adventures. However, the longer wheelbase slightly compromises its off-road agility, but overall, its a significant upgrade.
