Variant Recommendation
There are two versions of the Jimny: Zeta and Alpha. The Zeta variation is the most affordable model. It lacks alloy wheels, a headlight washer, and cruise control. It also lacks a rear wiper, washer, and other things. However, you can choose the Zeta model if you're on a tight budget and still want 4X4 gear. With all the bells and whistles, the Alpha variant is the one that comes highly recommended. Both versions come with 4X4 drivetrain options, as well as manual and AT gearbox choices.
Expert Verdict on Jimny
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is one of the most affordable off-road vehicles in India. The Jimny has strong 4X4 hardware to handle any type of road. It also has a combination of modern features and a retro-modern appearance. Two variations of the Jimny are available to meet the needs of various customer types. All things considered, it has a useful cabin that comes with a retro-modern style and strong off-road capabilities.
Pros & Cons of Maruti Jimny
Should I buy the Jimny?
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is an affordable off-roader. It has a reasonable cabin size, a good amount of features, and a retro-modern appearance. The Jimny is ideal for small cities because of its tiny size. It makes it easy to manoeuvre in urban environments. Nonetheless, if you want a diesel powertrain, a stronger engine, and a larger stance, you might want to consider the Mahindra Thar.
- The Maruti Suzuki Jimny offers a retro look with modern touches. It follows the same design as the global Jimny. However, it has been adapted for Indian customers. This includes adding a second row and two extra doors.
- The overall design is boxy and has a classic look, reminiscent of the iconic Gypsy from Maruti. The Jimny comes with modern features like LED projector headlights and headlight washers. The body panels of the Jimny resemble a typical old-school SUV. They have minimal curves and aerodynamics.
Jimny body specifications:
Wheel Size | R 15 |
Seating Capacity | 4 seaters |
Ground Clearance | 210 mm |
Boot Space | 208 liters |
- The inside of the Jimny looks a lot like the global model and takes inspiration from the iconic Gypsy. For instance, the dual-pod instrument console has red and black backlights. It resembles the Gypsy. There's also a sturdy grab handle on the dashboard, just like in the Gypsy. Maruti has added a leather-wrapped steering wheel to give it a modern touch. The steering wheel is similar to other Nexa models.
- It comes with features like a large touchscreen. It has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Additionally, it has a rear-view camera and automatic climate control.
- However, the cabin lacks width and space. There aren't many places to store your things, like wallets and water bottles. The rear bench space is narrow, and the seat recline is quite upright.
- Maruti has ensured that the Jimny is a robust SUV. It can withstand severe accidents and keep its occupants safe. As a result, it boasts an extensive and satisfying list of features.
- The safety net includes 6 airbags. It also has EBD with ABS, Hill Descent Control, Hill-Hold Control, Traction Control System, and ISOFIX child seats. Moreover, the braking system in the Jimny is precise. We observed that it performs well in bringing the vehicle to a stop, even with four adults and luggage on board.
- Additionally, the build quality of the interiors and the solid thud of the doors instil a strong sense of safety and robust construction.
Jimny safety specifications:
Airbag | 6 airbags |
Parking Sensor | Yes |
- The Jimny in India has the same engine as the one used globally. It runs on the reliable 1.5-litre K15-B engine. This engine produces a maximum power of 102 bhp and a peak torque of 136 Nm. You can choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. It can power either the rear wheels or all four wheels.
- The Jimny has a lightweight ladder-frame chassis. It performs well on regular roads and off-road terrain. The gear ratios are finely tuned. With the Suzuki AllGrip Pro+, driving the Jimny over rocks and steep slopes becomes quite easy.
- While this engine can provide decent efficiency, don't anticipate a particularly enjoyable experience. At times, this lower-powered engine may exhibit underwhelming performance on highways.
Jimny engine specifications:
Transmission | Manual & Automatic (TC) |
Mileage | 16.39 kmpl to 16.94 kmpl |
Engine | 1462 cc |
Power | 104.8 bhp @ 6000 rpm |
Torque | 134.2 Nm @ 4000 rpm |
Drive Train | AWD |
- The Jimny SUV is like a mountain goat for off-road fans around the world. Its small size and good suspension have made it a hit globally. The Indian version of the Jimny has leaf spring suspension both at the front and rear. However, when we took it for a test drive, we discovered that it has the best suspension and ride quality in its category right now.
- Handling the Jimny is not intimidating at all. The steering doesn't give much feedback. There's no play for small movements when driving straight. Also, its turning radius is quite large, and it takes some effort to manoeuvre through traffic.
Jimny features:
360 Degree Camera | No |
TPMS | Yes |
Sunroof | No |
Ventilated Seats | No |

Maruit Jimny vs Force Gurkha
Another competitor is the Force Gurkha. It is an off-road vehicle with a larger engine and larger dimensions than the Maruti Jimny. The Gurkha is the largest vehicle in the class thanks to its larger 2.6-litre diesel engine. In addition, Gurkha is significantly larger than the other two off-road vehicles in the segment. The Jimny has more modern features and more variants than the Gurkha. It includes the option of an automatic transmission. However, the Gurkha is exclusively equipped with a manual transmission and a diesel engine. If Price is the most important consideration then the Maruti Jimny is far less expensive than the Force Gurkha.
Maruti Jimny
The Mahindra Thar is the Maruti Suzuki Jimny's primary competitor. The Maruti Jimny has two extra doors, making it more practical. The Thar's larger size gives it a more commanding presence on the road. The Thar also gives you the option to select between a 4WD or RWD drivetrain and hard or soft tops. The Jimny has more features than the Thar. It includes a larger touchscreen, wireless connectivity, and a headlamp washer. On the other hand, the Thar has bigger, more powerful, and torquey engines available. You can choose between petrol or diesel. But there is a significant price difference between the two cars, which makes the Jimny more reasonably priced.
