Mahindra Bolero
The most affordable SUV with a rear-wheel drive setup and ladder-frame chassis in India is the Mahindra Bolero, starting at just Rs 9.79 lakh, with the top model costing Rs 10.90 lakh. It features a 1.5 L diesel engine that produces 76 Ps and 210 Nm of torque, and the best part about this vehicle is its reliability. Additionally, it's very light on the wallet, with servicing costs comparable to an Alto 800. It has a raw, rugged feel that makes it a special vehicle, something that has diminished in modern cars.

Variant Recommendation
The Mahindra Bolero is available in three variants: B4, B6, and B6(O). The B4 variant is not advisable due to the absence of most features. The top-recommended choice is the B6 variant, as it includes all the necessary features offered in the Bolero. The B6(O) variant, while equipped with all features, comes with a higher price tag and can be considered if a comprehensive feature set is a priority despite the increased cost.
Expert Verdict on Bolero
The Mahindra Bolero is a robust SUV designed to tackle tough terrains, making it popular in rural areas. With its practicality, seven seats, and a strong diesel engine with a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system, the Bolero provides reliable performance. Its main drawback is its lack of modern aesthetics and limited features.
Pros & Cons of Mahindra Bolero
Should I buy the Bolero?
If you're looking for a robust SUV that can handle rough terrains easily, is durable, and comes with essential features along with a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system, then the Bolero is worth considering. However, if you prefer a more contemporary design, modern features, and a petrol engine, you might want to explore other sub-4 meter SUVs like Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, or Tata Nexon.
- The Mahindra Bolero has a long history with many visual changes, but it has always stuck to its basic principles. The car has a new stylish front grille that gives it a strong look. The tough x-shaped bumper adds to its sturdy design. The headlights provide a clear view at night, and fog lamps are added to the front for better visibility in bad weather.
- On the back, the Bolero has a retro-style full-sized spare tire and clear-lens tail lights. S-shaped graphics on the sides make it look better, and there are black steps for easy entry and exit from the cabin. The wheel covers resemble alloy wheels, adding a nice touch.
- In terms of size, the Bolero is 3995mm long, 1745mm wide, and 1880mm tall. With a wheelbase of 2680mm, it offers good ground clearance. The car can seat 7 people, but you need to fold the last row of seats to get more space in the trunk.
- The Bolero doesn't boast a multitude of features, but Mahindra offers some noteworthy ones. These include keyless entry, a digital instrument panel, air conditioning, power steering, and a Bluetooth-enabled audio system with AUX and USB connectivity. Inside, the car keeps things simple with fabric-covered seats and cushions.
- The Bolero also features a driver information system displaying details like distance traveled and remaining fuel, along with a gear position indicator. Additionally, the car is equipped with four power windows. The Bolero model now has a convenient update – power window buttons in the rear for the occupants, a feature not present in the previous Bolero model.
- The seats have an upright position and offer limited under-thigh support, potentially causing discomfort on long drives. However, the adjustable backrest can improve comfort. The driver's seat is elevated for good visibility, but the middle row lacks legroom, especially for tall passengers. The last row is best suited for young children, as there is insufficient space and no under-thigh support or headroom for adults to sit comfortably.
- The Mahindra Bolero facelift is powered by a BS6-compliant 1.5-liter mHawk75 diesel engine, producing 75 bhp at 3,600 rpm and 210 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,200 rpm. Paired with a manual five-speed transmission, this engine is shared across all three Bolero variants.
- While there is some diesel noise in the cabin, it remains within acceptable limits. The engine is responsive with a top speed of 125 kmph and delivers torque evenly at lower RPMs, making it suitable for rough roads. However, achieving high speeds on highways may take time, and overtaking at high speeds requires careful planning.
- The gearbox could benefit from smoother changes. Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) need improvement, especially at high speeds due to tire noise, wind noise, and diesel clatter.
- The Mahindra Bolero is built to handle challenging road conditions and rough terrains, offering a smooth ride, thanks to well-tuned coil springs at the front and a robust leaf spring setup at the rear. The ladder-frame SUV excels in ride quality, especially on tough terrains. However, the light steering lacks feedback, affecting high-speed confidence.
- The Bolero is most comfortable cruising at 80-100 kmph on expressways. Passengers may experience significant body roll during turns, especially the third-row occupants who may find the ride rough and uncomfortable, leading to possible nausea.
- However, the ride is generally pleasant for the five passengers in the front, improving when the SUV is loaded. Even on bumpy roads, comfort is maintained, although the ride can become bouncy at higher speeds on such terrains. The large 5.8-meter turning radius makes 3-point turns challenging.

On the safety front, the new Mahindra Bolero comes with seat belt reminders, reverse parking sensors, and dual front airbags. According to the manufacturer, it is the first car in India with metal bumpers that adhere to pedestrian protection standards. In addition to all of this, the car has ABS for enhanced braking efficiency in emergency situations. Reverse parking sensors and seat belt reminders for the driver and even the co-driver are practical features.
Summary
In its latest format, the Mahindra Bolero is much safer than its previous versions but overall, the safety kit on offer remains pretty basic.
