Mahindra Thar Roxx 4X4 And Mahindra Scorpio N 4X4: Price Comparison
Mahindra Thar Roxx 4X4 and Scorpio N 4X4 is only available with a 2.2L mHawk diesel engine both with manual and automatic transmission but with different tunings. Now, first let's check out the price of Thar Roxx price, than Scorpio N.
Variant Name (Thar Roxx) | 4X4 6MT | 4X4 6AT |
MX5 Diesel | Rs 18.79 lakh | NA |
AX5L Diesel | NA | Rs 20.99 lakh |
AX7L Diesel | Rs 20.99 lakh | Rs 22.49 lakh |
Variant Name (Scorpio N) | 4X4 6MT | 4X4 6AT |
Z4 (7 seater) | Rs 18.00 lakh | NA |
Z4 E (7 seater) | Rs 18.50 lakh | NA |
Z8 (7 seater) | Rs 21.37 lakh | Rs 23.09 lakh |
Z8 L (7 seater) | Rs 22.99 lakh | Rs 24.54 lakh |
Now, these are detailed numbers about the ex-showroom prices of the variants that offer a 4x4 drivetrain in these vehicles. Clearly, the Scorpio N is the more affordable one, with the Z4 trim starting at Rs 18 lakh only. However, there is a catch: the next variant, which is just a mechanical upgrade over the Z4, is the Z4 (E), and (E) denotes an electric steering wheel, whereas the previous trim has a hydraulic steering wheel, which can be tiresome, especially during city commutes. So, the automaker carved out a special trim for people looking for this mechanical input.
In the Thar Roxx, every variant is equipped with electric power steering with tilt functionality. So, the Rs 30,000 cheaper price of the Scorpio N doesnt make much of a difference. As we go higher in the variants, the Scorpio N turns out to be the most expensive, with an ex-showroom price above Rs 24 lakh, whereas the Roxx finale is priced at Rs 22.49 lakh.
Engine Comparison
As mentioned above, both SUVs feature the same engine but with different tunings, and the torque figures also change with the automatic transmissions because Mahindra uses a torque converter here. Let's start with the Thar Roxx engine specs.
2.2 L mHawk (4X4) - MX5 MT, AX7 L MT
- Power - 152 Ps
- Torque - 330 Nm
- Transmission - 6 MT
2.2 L mHawk (4X4) - AX5L AT, AX7L AT
- Power - 174 Ps
- Torque - 370 Nm
- Transmission - 6 AT
In the Mahindra Scorpio 4WD variants, the second option is offered; however, 370 Nm of torque is available with the 6MT, while 400 Nm is available with the 6AT. But in the Roxx, Manual Shift Part-Time 4x4 with High & Low Reduction Gear with ELD (Electric Locking Differential) is there and in Scorpio N 4XPLOR terrain mode which electronically controls the traction for better crossing over different terrain is provided, for the complete experience of 4WD.
Mahindra Thar Roxx 4X4 And Mahindra Scorpio N 4X4: Dimensions
Dimensions | Mahindra Thar Roxx | Mahindra Scorpio N |
Length | 4428 mm | 4662 mm |
Width | 1870 mm | 1917 mm |
Height | 1923 mm | 1857 mm |
Wheelbase | 2850 mm | 2750 mm |
Ground Clearance | TBA | 187 mm |
Boot Space | 640 L | 460 L (After 3rd row) |
Total Number of Seats | 5 Seater | 6/7 Seater |
Clearly, the Scorpio N is a bigger SUV, covering more area in every aspect. However, the boot space is a significant compromise, as there isnt much room available with all three rows up. Only 460 L of space remains after the third row is folded. In contrast, the Thar Roxx offers 640 L of space, making it perfect for all your road trips. Additionally, a crucial aspect of the dimensions is the ground clearance, which is lower in the Scorpio N at 187 mm.
Thar Roxx GC is yet to be disclosed, but for sure it isn't lower than 210 mm. This translates to the Roxx being more off-road capable than its rival here; plus, the water wading capacity and approach angle are way higher here. However, a lower GC has its own advantages, such as reduced body roll, higher stability, and better control of the SUV at high speeds.
Features Comparison
In this department the Thar Roxx, which is the new car straight away wins. As there are plethora of features available which Scorpio N doesn't have, even with a much higher price tag, and they are:
- Level 2 ADAS
- 10.25 inch infotainment system
- 10.25 inch digital driver's display
- Panaromic sunroof
- 360-degree camera
- Harman Kardon (TM) Quantum Logic premium audio system
- Blind View monitor
- Manual Shift Part-Time 4x4 with High & Low Reduction Gear with ELD (Electric Locking Differential)
- 2H mode with Front Axle disconnect
- R19 Diamond cut alloys
- Electronic parking brake with auto hold
Features which you won't find in the Thar Roxx but in Scorpio N are dual-zone climate control, 12 speakers from Sony, and most importantly, the third row.

Verdict
So, on paper, the Thar Roxx has definitely taken over the big daddy. Yes, it is still focused on the adventurous side but still packs more features and offers it at a lower price. Now, Mahindra has improved the ride quality of the Thar Roxx and installed an electric steering wheel, which makes this sturdy SUV more usable in cities than the regular 3-door Thar. However, the option of 3 rows will still attract people with joint families more than the Thar Roxx. So, if you don't want a 7-seater SUV, then you can definitely go with the bigger Thar, which is a clear winner here.
