Mahindra Thar: Engine & Specs
Mahindra Thar comes with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol-powered variants are equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder mStallion 150 TGDi engine which unleashes top power of 150 bhp @ 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 300 Nm @ 1,250-3,000 rpm with a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, the torque value is partially higher at 320 Nm @ 1,500-3,000 rpm with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Needless to say, the manual shift part-time 4WD system comes as standard fitment.
Coming to the diesel variants, they can be availed with a choice of two powertrains namely 1.5L 4-cylinder D117 CRDe and 2.2L 4-cylinder mHawk 130 CRDe. The former develops a maximum power of 117 bhp @ 3,500 rpm and the highest torque of 300 Nm @ 1,750-2,500 rpm while the latter belts out a max power of 130 bhp @ 3,750 rpm and peak torque value of 300 Nm @ 1,600-2,800 rpm. The smaller 1.5L diesel engine loses out on automatic transmission and 4WD system as it only features a 6-speed manual and rear-wheel-drive system. Now, let's talk about the variant-wise features of the Mahindra Thar in detail.
Mahindra Thar Variants
AX Opt - Rs 11.35 Lakh To Rs 15 Lakh
The AX Opt range comprises a total of four variants namely Diesel 2WD HT, Petrol 4WD CT, Diesel 4WD CT, and Diesel 4WD HT at price points of Rs 11.35 lakh, Rs 14.30 lakh, Rs 14.85 lakh, and Rs 15 lakh, respectively. All the aforementioned prices are ex-showroom. The Thar AX Opt is offered with a hardtop as well as a convertible top for the buyers. Since this is the most basic trim of the Thar, it loses out on the majority of the advanced and premium features. However, Mahindra Thar AX Opt still gets a few noteworthy features, which are listed below:
- Adjustable Headlights
- LED Taillamps
- Rear Parking Sensor
- Manual AC with Heater
- 12V Power Outlet
- USB Charger
- Rear Seat Headrest
- Keyless Entry
- Tilt Adjustable Steering
- Tachometer
- EBD
- ABS
- Dual-Front Airbags
- Central Locking
- Rear Defogger (Hard Top variant)
LX - Rs 12.85 Lakh to Rs 17.20 Lakh
The LX variant is Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2.20 lakh more expensive than the AX Opt variant. With more moolah, comes more perks! The LX range of the Thar SUV comes packed with a plethora of bells and whistles which includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, it misses out on wireless charging, ADAS tech, and Google/Alexa connectivity.
- Cruise Control
- Follow Me Home Headlamp
- 18-inch Alloy Wheels
- Power Adjustable ORVM
- Fog Lamps
- Speed Sensing Door Lock
- 8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment
- Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Bluetooth Connectivity
- 4-Speakers
- Navigation with Live Traffic
- Hill Assist
- TPMS
Variant Recommendation
If you have a budget of Rs 17 lakh, then the AX Opt range is best suited for you. Though, undoubtedly it is deprived of multiple premium features, the bells and whistles on offer are decent and return good value for your money. Furthermore, you get a choice of petrol and diesel engines with automatic and manual gearboxes along with rear-wheel-drive and 4WD. However, if you have a penchant for premium features, especially tech and connectivity, then you can go for the LX variants. They are a bit heavy on the pocket but offer more comfort, convenience, and premiums.

Both the variants offer a good value for money and hence, you can choose according to your preferences and budget
