Delhi To Deregister All 10 Year Old Diesel Vehicles from Jan 1, 2022

Owners can retrofit their 10-year-old diesel vehicles with an electric powertrain. In areas with the least vehicular density, owners can procure a NOC.

To comply with National Green Tribunals new order, the Delhi Government will start deregistering all 10-year old diesel vehicles from January 1, 2022. However, owners can also apply for a No Objection Certificate, and later register these vehicles in other states. The new order comes after five years when the NGT had announced in 2016 that old diesel vehicles that comply with BS-I and BS-II norms must be scrapped first. Initially, in 2014 the same board had stated that 15-year-old petrol vehicles and 10-year-old diesel vehicles will need to be scrapped, with immediate effect.

With the new order, the NGT has specified that diesel vehicles that are more than 15 years old will not get any NOC, it is applicable to 10-year-old vehicles. But diesel vehicles up to 10 years, and petrol vehicles up to 15 years old, can apply for NOC anywhere in the country. However, NOC will be made available to vehicles that ply in low-density areas.

Another option suggested by the Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot is to convert these old vehicles into all-electric vehicles. By doing this, they can use this vehicle for more than 10 years or so. To achieve, this, owners will be required to retrofit their diesel vehicles with electric kits from agencies that have been approved by the department.
