The Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari recently stated that, the government will soon make using a rear seat belt reminder mandatory. A few days ago, Cyrus Mistry, the former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away in a terrible car accident. According to the police, he would have survived if he had been wearing the seat belt in the back seat. The Minister stated that a notification outlining the penalty structure for rear seat occupants who are discovered not to be wearing seat belts will also be released in the coming days.

The Central Motor Vehicle Rules already have a provision for seat belt use on the back seat, and a fine of Rs 1,000 is already in effect. According to specialists in traffic safety, a rear seat belt is essential for occupant protection. The government has previously made seat belt reminders for the front seats necessary, and it will soon make the reminder for the rear seats as well.
Our nation also has one of the highest rates of mortality from traffic accidents. One of the most evident issues is the lack of seat belt use. In the backseat, no one really wants to buckle up, and some simply do so to keep from getting tickets. There were a total of 4,03,116 road accident incidents last year, according to the National Crime Record Bureau's report on Accidental Deaths in India 2021, which was published last month. This is an increase of 13.61 percent yearly. Road accident injuries were 3,71,884, an increase of 11% from 2020's 3,35,000. Road accident fatalities grew by 16.83%, from 1,33,201 to 1,55,622 in 2021.

According to the World Health Organization, using a rear seat belt by alone can reduce the chance of dying in a car accident by up to 25% and the likelihood of getting hurt by an incredible 75%. One of its jobs of seatbelts is to keep your body from moving around too much when you collide with something, protecting you from the tremendously strong impact forces.
