Electric two wheelers are not always about limited top speed or cheap looking body panels or a compromised design. Companies like Tork have showcased the even green e-machines can be fun and exciting. Joining the same bandwagon is the upcoming Thunderbolt electric sports bike that will be launched soon. This motorcycle was showcased the EV India expo and here is a quick lowdown on the product.
Looks bling
The first thing that will strike you is the way this one looks - nothing less than a mid-capacity Japanese bike, right? The twin headlight set-up, sharp angles and a striking blue-black combination definitely makes it standout. Like most big bikes, the tank is huge and the Joy Thunderbolt also gets a proper twin seat set-up. There are clip on handle bars, twin disc brakes and a proper swingers at the rear with a mono-shock doing duties here. The company official confirmed that the body or underpinnings is not an import but made here in India by its vendors. If this is indeed true, it 's an impressive work done!
The bike rides on 17 inch alloy wheels at both the ends. While the front is 110mm wide, the rear is one is pretty thick at 140mm. One thing that has surprised us is the front suspension. While the bike on display had conventional telescopic forks, the spec sheet on offer mentioned USD or upside down forks. Also, the official present there refused to get the battery connected, thereby not allowing us to see / understand the LCD speedometer console and its functions. Strange.
Tech Specs
The Joy e-bike Thunderbolt gets a 73.6 V / 72 Ah LFP battery that powers the 5000 watt brushless DC motor. Top speed is claimed to be over 100 km/h but surprisingly, the range is a very limited 110 km. Likewise, we were surprised to see that the battery takes as much as 9 hours for a full charge. In this modern of fast charging, this quoted time does seem slow. Joy e-bikes also claim the Thunderbolt takes 6 units of power for a full charge and offers running cost of just 40 paise per km. In comparison, a 200cc motorcycle roughly five times more expensive to ride. The charging socket is located under the seat, near the right foot peg. The company could have instead put it at the fuel filler cap location - apt, eh?
