Kia is preparing to expand its electric vehicle offerings with the introduction of mass-market models. One of these upcoming EVs, the Kia Sonet in ist electric avatar has been recently spotted undergoing testing in India. While the heavily camouflaged test mule provides limited visibility of the exterior, the overall proportions and silhouette clearly indicate that it's based on the Kia Sonet platform.

The Kia Sonet EV will be one of the first mass-market electric vehicles from Kia, expected to launch in India by mid-2025. It will compete directly with the Tata Nexon EV, a major rival in the segment, along with the Mahindra XUV 400. While specific specifications are currently unavailable, the Sonet EV is likely to feature a substantial battery to compete effectively in the segment, with an estimated range of around 450 kilometers on a full charge. Similar to the Tata Nexon EV, Kia may offer both standard-range and long-range variants at different price points.

Kia has been shifting its focus on EVs for quite some time and has launched the flagship Kia EV9 in India at a sticker price of Rs. 1.3 crores which is the highest for a Kia in India. Returning to this section's protagonist, the Kia Sonet EV is likely to feature distinct color options to differentiate it from the internal combustion engine (ICE) version.
