Remember that very compact electric car from MG that we told you about in the past on quite a few occasions? Well, MG Motors has now revealed that the EV is christened the MG Comet in India. It is derived from its sibling brand's Wuling Air EV, which is already on sale in Indonesian markets. It is focused more on urban commuting, and that is very obvious.
What's In The Name? You Ask
As for the name, MG says it derives inspiration from the iconic 1934 British airplane which participated in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race keeping alive its tradition of airplane-derived names. MG's Hector and Gloster SUVs are also named after World War II-era British airplanes. So, based on the same lineage, the name Comet.
MG Comet Design: Different
It's definitely unlike anything that you've seen on the road, at least here in India. What's even more interesting to note is that at 2.99 meters, it is smaller than the Tata Nano, which was 3.099mm in length. (and you thought that was small). But since it is an electric vehicle, there will be plenty of wheelbase at 2010mm and efficient space management in the cabin.
The front of Comet carries a dual-tone finish with a tall creased stance integrated with an LED strip that flushes out towards the side while integrating into the ORVMs. The double-barrel headlights setup and the wheels pushed to the edges do prove to be a distinctive element.

Features: Not A Problem
The MG Comet is being propelled as an urban city roundabout vehicle. So, it is expected to pack a punch of features. It would be sporting a big infotainment screen , like a 9-10 incher, automatic climate control, Wireless Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay, and more. It also makes sense for this to be a feature-loaded vehicle considering the price point that it is expected to be sold at. Well, in continuation, let's see the price segment.
Powertrain
The Comet EV is expected to be powered by a battery of around 20-25kWh capacity. The battery will be locally sourced from Tata AutoCompany and expected that it will give the Comet EV a driving range of up to 200km that will likely be certified by iCAT, just like MGs other electric car is, the ZS EV. The Comet is likely to be powered by a single, front-axle motor with a power output of around 50kW (68hp).
MG Comet Price And Rivals: Sounds Premium
The sister brands Wuling Air EV retails at Rs. 13 lakh Indian Rupees iN Indonesia. In the Indian market it is expected to retail upwards of Rs. 10 lakh, which is nowhere entry-level. And that is not even the motive of MG. The positioning of the Comet will decide its fate in the Indian Market. It will directly face the Tata Tiago EV prices at Rs. 8.59 lakh- 11.99 lakh and the newly launched Citroen eC3 at Rs. 11.50- 12.43 lakh. If priced around 11 lahks, it would be targeted more towards the wealthy, looking for another city vehicle for quick runs.
VERDICT- The new Comet EV is an all-new offering for the Indian market. It will be unlike anything that plys on our roads. It is more of an urban city runner aimed at your regular errands running. Since the pricing has not been revealed, it remains to be seen as to how and where will the MG Comet compete in price terms. What do you think about the MG Comet EV? Do share your thoughts.
