KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- From 10th September, Tata.ev will report the range of all their EVs.
- Previously, only P1 tests were conducted, but now a P2 Extra Urban test has been added.
- Along with these figures, Tata has also provided the numbers from their own C75 test.
Tata.ev has just posted the revised range for all of their electric cars after their range was tested under the new rules set by the Government of India (through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, MoRTH). This step was taken because there was no common platform for testing the range of electric vehicles under a standardised procedure.
The new figures might be different from what Tata.ev had previously disclosed for cars such as the Tata Curvv.ev, Tata Nexon.ev, and more. Let's learn more about this news and understand the new standard for electric vehicle testing. What Is The MIDC Range Test?
A new test parameter measures how far an electric vehicle can go in both cities and on highways. The MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) test is conducted in two parts: P1 (Urban, denoting city driving) and P2 (Extra Urban, denoting city + highway driving).
Now, the P2 is a new addition here, because EVs popularity is on accelerating and the reason for that is impressive range figures, communicated by automakers.
P1 Urban
The average speed of the EV will be 19 km/h, with a maximum of 50 km/h. The air conditioning will be off, and the load on the vehicle will be around 150 kg. Most importantly, the temperature will be between 20 C to 30 C, and the vehicle will be driven only in the city.
P2 Extra Urban
As mentioned above, this is the test for determining the range in city + highway driving. The minimum speed will be 31 km/h and the maximum 90 km/h, while all other parameters such as load and temperature will remain the same as in P1. Important thing to note is, the test will go through city to highway.
Tata.ev Range Overview
On their Instagram handle, Tata.ev posted the range figures they had previously disclosed. The Curvv EV with a 55 kWh battery pack stands out, achieving 585 km on urban roads and 502 km on extra-urban roads. However, the C75 data says the range is about 400 to 425 km. These numbers are the same as those in the brochures, but new figures will be released on 10th September, as mentioned by Tata.

Verdict
This is a great step taken by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), as it will now provide people with transparent range figures for electric vehicles, allowing potential customers to compare these cars. Until now, manufacturers were testing them under their own conditions, which the average person wasn't aware of. Tata, being the first to implement these standards, will make the new range public from 10th September.
