Piaggio has successfully captured the commercial three wheeler market in terms of electric powertrain and has fetched decent sales figures. Currently manufacturing two wheeler scooters like Vespa and Aprilia, Piaggio EV division plans to divert funds towards research and development for unique solutions in electric mobility.
Piaggio plans on developing technologies like battery swapping and electric mobility seeing the gravity of the environmental and social situation today. They want to choose the path of cost optimisation and breakthrough technology in the same hand. It might sound unrealistic but the Italian automaker is confident enough as they can overcome these challenges with time.
Piaggio plans on developing a sustainable product which can be a value for money package for their customers even if the government subsides or grants are pulled off in future. As per a few higher officials in Piaggio India, most of the volumes in the two wheeler EV sector are being generated because of government subsides and this turnover would surely face a decline due to minor changes in policies too. The Indian public is ready to have a hands on experience with electric mobility keeping in mind the monetary advantages they get and they tend to ignore the technological advantages of electric mobility.
Currently, the centre and state governments have introduced subsidies of upto 40% on manufacturing, sales and ownership of an electric two wheeler which makes it economical for the automotive manufacturer as well as the buyer. However, India in terms of the charging and manufacturing infrastructure is not practical prepared for transition to electric powertrains.
As Piaggio already manufactures electric scooters for the European markets, they plan to introduce electric two wheelers in india which would be developed from the scratch. Thus, not focussing on market presence in electric powertrain based two wheelers, Piaggio India plans to take its won sweet time to deliver the best results.
