The world's highest motorable tunnel is set to be thrown open to the public this year. Its officially called the Atul Tunnel but famously known as the Rohtang Tunnel and final touches are underway. Work on this 8.8 km long tunnel started in June 2010 and due to both operational and geographical challenges, the deadlines have been pushed forward multiple times. However, inspite of the Corona Pandemic, it seems the tunnel will be open to the public before winter sets in this year.
The video above was made two years back and gives you a deeper insight into the Rohtang tunnel, location and specifications. The Rohtang pass, at an altitude of over 13,000 feet remains closed for vehicles for almost 6 months each year, cutting off the Lahaul valley from the rest of the world. More importantly, work is also underway to create a tunnel under the Baralacha la pass and once it is also made, this will ensure all weather connectivity to Ladakh. Currently, the Manali - Leh highway is motorable from June to October only as the passes shut down due to snowfall.

As per latest updates via Tribune, road surface works, installation of electro-mechanic fittings, including lighting, ventilation and intelligent traffic control systems are being executed right now. One steel super structure bridge of 100 metre length across river Chandra on the North Portal of the tunnel is also under construction which will be done soon. The work was halted for 10 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, a statement issued today said.
Further, the opening of the Rohtang tunnel will also bring down the current Manali - Leh distance of 475km by 46km. Not only this, going up and down the Rohtang pass takes as much as 3-5 hours depending on traffic conditions. With the tunnel operational, driving to Leh from Manali will be a 10-12 hour journey only. During winters, the Rohtang tunnel will also provide direct access to the people of Lahaul who otherwise have to wait for the pass to open up.
