In the past few months, we saw a number of electric vehicles catching fire on the roads due to a number of reasons including battery leaks, short circuits and whatnot. Following these incidents, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has warned the EV manufacturers of tough penalties if they are found to be negligent. The move comes in after the EVs received a strong backlash from the users and the potential buyers. Here are all the details that you should know.
As per Mr Gadkari, it was unfortunate to see so many EVs catching fire and a few people losing their lives due to the same while the others were injured. He also shares that the government has set up a committee to look into these incidents and conduct a detailed enquiry. In addition to this, the committee is also required to make recommendations on how it can be curtailed. Following this, a number of guidelines will be laid out to ensure the quality and production standards for the electric vehicle.
Mr Nitin Gadkari further said, "IF any company is found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered." He also makes a recommendation to the companies that all the vehicles should be recalled to check for any issues while the defective batches should be given priority and fixed immediately. These steps will not only ensure that the electric vehicles are safe for the current users, but will also help improve the confidence of new buyers in electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
