The Shillong Traffic Police Department has taken the initiative to charge offenders with a fine of up to Rs. 300 under Section 177. The same will be applicable to the whole of India.
The misuse of hazard lights has been a real menace in Indian cities. To curb the issue, the traffic police department in Shillong, Meghalaya has implemented a rule to charge offenders with a fine of Rs. 300. This step will ensure that people learn and practice the correct usage of the hazard light and turn indicators.
Hazard lights are used to alert or warn drivers, who are stuck in the middle of a highway or have encountered problems in the middle of their drive with their car or bike. However, some people use their hazard lights to move in the opposite direction of traffic. Some also install blinkers on the side of their car, and motorcycles, which boils down to just some mischievous show-off.

Hazard lights are important on high-speed highways or even in narrow roads, only when your vehicle has gone through any problem. Drivers who will misuse hazard lights in the name of mischief or for any other purpose, they will be charged with a fine of Rs. 300, under Section 177 of The Motor Vehicle Act. Thereby, this rule shall be applicable to the whole of India.

This move has been implemented to ensure that people learn the correct usage of hazard lights and turn indicators. Many motorcycle riders also tend to change lanes using hand gestures, such acts also come under this purview.
Since the rule was started in Shillong, Meghalaya, the process will start with first-time offenders they will be charged Rs. 100, and repeated offenders will have to pay Rs. 300.
