Expert Verdict on R3
The Yamaha R3 is a beautiful-looking sports bike that offers the typical Japanese refinement, fast performance, and easy rideability. Also, the overall fit & finish it is solid and the bike is comfortable to ride as well. But, the price tag of it is very premium and the lack of features make it a less value for money deal.

Pros & Cons of Yamaha R3
Should I buy the R3?
Yamaha has brought the R3 as a CBU in India. The new R3 is based on the global bike and hence its design is same. But, the overall build quality and fit-finish are superb. Also, the aggressive styling is matched by a comfortable riding position. The 321cc parallel-twin engine offers one of the smoothest riding experiences in its segment. But, priced at a premium the R3 doesn’t offer any modern features. Also, the lack of safety features like a slipper clutch makes it a bit less desirable.
- The strongest aspect of the R3 is its engine performance. The 321cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine offers a very strong performance. In our tests, the indicated top speed was upwards of 170 kmph at the BIC, Noida. The engine is very smooth and rich in torque; especially in the mid-range. Below 3,000 rpm, it doesn’t feel very torquey but post it, the bike simply flies. Also, the redline performance above 9,000 rpm is simply stupendous. There is some minor buzz from the engine around 6,000-7,000 rpm.
- The 6-speed gearbox is very slick and easy to use. There are no false neturals and the feel of using it is also very decent.
- The trellis perimeter frame of the R3 makes it one of the sharpest handling bikes in its segment. It is fairly easy to ride, the turning radius is also moderate but the agility is superb. You can easily flick the bike and lean it extremely on tight corners. Handling experience of the R3 will make you buy one.
- The USD front suspension is not adjustable on the R3 but the rear monoshock has a preload adjustment. However, you’ll not need to adjust it a lot due to the brilliant tuning. The bike is neither stiff nor soft. It handles well on the corners while the undulations of the road are easily absorbed by the suspension. But, it is the sharp potholes that’ll feel on the handlebar due to the settings. Overall, if ridden on the tarmac, the R3 remains pliant most of the time.
- Equipped with a 282mm disc at the front and 220mm disc at the rear, the braking of R3 is spot-on. The bike stops in a straight line even after braking above 150 kmph. The stability and the braking bite of the R3 make it a rider-oriented bike. Also, we noticed that during our tests there was no brake fade even after repeated hard braking use on the track.
- The core area of lag for the R3 is the features department. It has nothing to offer to the consumers here. You only get a digital instrument console. There are no features like Quickshifter, riding modes, TFT screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and even a slipper clutch.
- The design of the R3 is beautiful to look at. However, it is not intimidating like the smaller R15 M. The R3 is already on sale in the global markets and hence a fresh flair in its design is required. The front gives you a proper big bike feel but the rear profile looks nimble.
R3 body specifications:
Seat Height | 780 mm |
Weight | 169 kg |
Wheel Size | 17 inch |
Fuel Tank Capacity | 14 liters |
- The R3 is not a super sports bike but it is a sports tourer. Hence, the clip-on handlebar offers a commanding yet comfortable posture. Also, the rear-set footpegs are made for aggressive riding but the overall riding triangle of the R3 is comparatively comfortable to its rivals. The seat is also adequately cushioned but the tank hinders the leg movements.
- In terms of safety, the only feature you get is a dual-channel ABS.
