Latest On Datsun Redi-Go 2017-2022
Datsun redi-GO is a 5 seater hatchback that made its debut in 2015. The redi-GO is a small hatchback that is affordable, convenient to navigate through traffic in India and has a low maintenance cost. The car is easy to drive and hence, it is a perfect choice for customers transitioning from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler. The design of the car is simple yet unique and it has sufficient power and features that a first-time car buyer would require.
In 2020, a facelift of the redi-GO was launched. Although the design remains the same, the current model has new features similar to the ones seen in hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R. It gets a touchscreen infotainment system, safety features like dual-front airbags and much more.
The Datsun redi-GO is offered in a price bracket of Rs.3.83 - 4.98 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) as of August 2021. The redi-GO is available in 6 variants- D, A, T, T(O) 800cc, T(O) 1.0L, and T(O) 1.0L AMT. Direct rivals of the Datsun redi-GO include Renault Kwid, Hyundai Santro, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and Maruti Suzuki Alto. Currently, the redi-GO is on sale with two petrol engine options- a 0.8-litre unit that churns out 54 PS of maximum power and 72 Nm of peak torque, and a 1.0-litre unit that produces 69 PS of maximum power and 91 Nm of torque. Both are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, but only the 1.0-litre petrol engine gets the option of a 5-speed AMT.

Pros & Cons of Datsun Redi-Go 2017-2022
Datsun Redi-Go 2017-2022 Detailed Review
The redi-GO has a fresh touch to its design elements. The SUV-like exterior looks pretty cool and even feels like it belongs to a bigger car. The headlamp and DRL setup surely seems unique and different from the conventional design. The L shaped LED DRLs in the lower portion of the front-end and sharp looking headlamps in the upper section give it an upmarket feel. The chrome exterior trims and dual-tone silver and black wheel covers add to the vibrant look of the vehicle. The black bezels around the fog lamps along with chrome accents on the front grille gives it a rugged look.
The Datsun redi-GO gets 14-inch wheels that contribute to the good ride quality of the vehicle. The ride height is also decent. The vehicle has a tall stance resulting in better driveability. The vehicle also gets structural reinforcements for better pedestrian safety. As for the side profile, the vehicle gets an angular structure and black cladding that gives it a tough look. There are roof rails as an option that mimics an SUV-like stance.
At the rear, the vehicle gets LED integrated into the angular tail lamps that spruce up the look from behind. In addition to this, there are reflectors on the rear bumper that enhances the look of the vehicle. The redi-GO measures 3435mm in length, 1574mm in width and 1546mm in height. It gets a wheelbase of 2348mm.
Summary
The Datsun redi-GO has an attractive design that looks contemporary from all angles. The vehicle has decent ground clearance and is easy to drive through narrow lanes.
Like the exterior of the vehicle, the interior of the redi-GO has a vibrant design. The dashboard gets a dual-tone treatment of silver and black. It houses an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, there is an intuitive reverse parking assist camera with a projection guide. The vehicle has two power windows in the front but the rear only gets manual opening and closing of windows. Also, the transmission tunnel does not create a big bump on the floor as a result of which three adults can be seated comfortably at the rear.

The seats are not cushioned well enough and are positioned upright. There is no under-thigh support, so long journeys are likely to cause discomfort. Also, the lean angle of the seats feels a tad too upright, which could cause discomfort on long journeys. However, the cabin is still quite practical as there are lots of utility spaces inside the cabin. As for the legroom, Datsun claims that the redi-GO has the best-in-class leg space.
The redi-GO is also equipped with an HVAC system. The cabin can be cooled quickly thanks to the redi-GO’s powerful A/C unit. In addition to all these features, there is a USB port and a 12V charging socket for added convenience.
Summary
Overall, the redi-GO cabin seems to have decent build quality, but the dashboard is built with hard plastics. The seats are not as comfortable as the ones on the Renault Kwid.
As mentioned earlier, the Datsun redi-GO comes with two petrol engine options- a 0.8L and a 1.0. If the carmaker is to be believed, the I-SAT engine technology optimizes the fuel efficiency and power output. Both the engines are now compliant with the latest BS6 emission standards.
The 0.8-litre unit churns out 54PS of maximum power and 72Nm of peak torque and the 1.0-litre unit produces 69PS of maximum power and 91Nm of peak torque. Both are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, but only the 1.0-litre petrol engine gets the option of a 5-speed AMT.
The 1.0-litre engine is much peppier and responsive when compared to the 0.8-litre petrol engine. The 0.8-litre engine sometimes struggles when it encounters steep inclines. To facilitate more torque while driving on inclines and to perform quick overtakes, it demands constant upshifts. The AMT gearbox offered with the 1.0-litre engine is slick and precise when compared with the 5-speed manual transmission. The manual gearbox functions great but feels hefty. Other than that, there are no issues with the way it performs.
Summary
Both the engines on offer are fuel-efficient, but the 1.0-litre engine has the upper hand since it has more power. Also, ARAI claims the fuel economy figures to be 22kmpl, which is quite good for this segment.
The Datsun redi-GO has a soft suspension setup. The steering feels light, which is good in traffic conditions but the issue here is that the lightness stays even as the speeds rise. The vehicle can easily negotiate tight U-turns but the steering has a weak return to centre action. The braking system on the redi-GO is said to be best-in-class as it has the ability to bring the vehicle to a complete halt from 100kmph to 0 in just 32.3meters.
Like we said, the suspension is set on the softer side to absorb bumps and impact from potholes. Such a setup does provide smooth ride quality but the downside of a soft suspension setup is the constant thud and vibration that creeps into the cabin when encountering shallow potholes. High-speed stability is also not the strongest point of this vehicle. Since it is a light vehicle, the stability at high speeds goes for a toss. However, the vehicle is easy to handle at lower speeds.
Summary
The Datsun redi-GO has a decent build quality and handles well at lower speeds. However, at high speeds, the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels increase causing a disturbance in the cabin. The engine also becomes vocal at higher RPMs.
In terms of safety features, the Datsun redi-GO facelift comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, central locking, seat belt reminder, front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and speed sensors. The car gets 3-point seat belts at the rear and a 2-point seat belt for the middle passenger.
However, even with the aforementioned equipment and safety features, this vehicle has managed to score only a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection at the Global NCAP crash tests. This is lower than what the close cousin Renault Kwid has scored on the same test bed. However, the company claims that the vehicle features a robust body shell and several strategically placed crumple zones to absorb the impact in the scenario of an accident. Also, it must be noted here that the passenger-side airbag is available only on the top-spec T(O) trim.
Summary
The Datsun redi-GO has scored better than arch rival Maruti Suzuki S-Presso on the Global NCAP test bed but hasn’t performed as well as the Renault Kwid. Also, we wish the co-driver airbag was made standard across all trims.
