Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: Old Vs New Explained

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The current Alto K10 is powered by a different K10C engine also seen on the Celerio
  • At 2380 mm, it gets a 20 mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor
  • The Renault Kwid is the Alto K10s only rival today

We dont even need to mention just how much importance the name Alto holds for Maruti Suzuki today. The new Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 does not have a lot in common with its predecessors, so lets see what changes have taken place. However, before moving on, do consider joining the 91wheels WhatsApp Community for all automotive updates!

Design and Brief History

As a standalone name, the Alto has been around since the year 2000, available initially with 1.1-litre and 796cc petrol engines. While the latter was eventually discontinued sometime around 2003-04, the 796cc soldiered on till as late as 2023.

The first-gen Alto K10 came out in 2010, causing quite a buzz with its edgy commercials, and then the second generation followed in 2014, which received a completely new design based on the Alto 800. The second-gen model was discontinued in 2020, but the Alto K10 eventually made a comeback in 2022, and it has proven to be the next step forward, with the 796cc Alto now resting in peace.

Engine

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

The Alto K10 has always been powered by the K-series engines; the earlier models used to be powered by the K10B engine, producing 67 bhp and 90Nm of torque, paired to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. Meanwhile, the current Alto K10 gets a three-cylinder K10C engine under its hood, packing 66 bhp and 89Nm of torque, with the same transmission options as before.

Dimensions and Size

Interestingly, at 3530mm, the Alto K10 is marginally shorter in length compared to its predecessor, but it gets a 20mm longer wheelbase. It has also grown marginally taller than its predecessor, with height marked at 1520mm; a difference of 45mm. However, at 1490mm, the width has remained the same.

Interiors and Features

The Alto has always been known to do the bare basics just right, with the bare minimum features on offer. However, with prices of the current-gen Alto K10 now going up, Maruti Suzuki has rightfully equipped it with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Some other features on this car include reverse parking sensors, a four-speaker sound system, steering-mounted audio controls, keyless entry, and a gear shift indicator among other things. However, most of these features will require you to opt for the VXi+/VXi CNG variants, which cost between Rs 6.07 lakh to Rs 6.51 lakh (on-road, Delhi).

The VXi MT and AGS variants of the Alto K10 still offer a Bluetooth/USB audio port, which might also remind you of the previous generation car that used to offer a similar setup.

Safety

In terms of safety, the current-gen Alto K10 is not all that different from its predecessor, as both of them offer dual airbags at the front, along with ABS, and a speed-alert system among other things. The seatbelt reminder in the older Alto K10 was limited to the front row, while in the current-gen car, it is available for all passengers.

Verdict

The Alto K10's USP was that it was a cost-effective hatchback, which sadly has gone with the increase in prices due to the current market trends. The Renault Kwid is its only competitor and it offers more equipment for a similar price tag. However, there simply is no beating Maruti Suzuki when you factor in reliability, service network, peace of mind, and the Alto K10's capabilities in the mountains.
