Maruti Ignis
One of the sporty cars in the Maruti Suzuki lineup, the Ignis is a great choice for first-time buyers as it is very easy to drive, offers decent features, provides comfortable seats, and has acceptable interior space. The 1.2L 4-cylinder K-Series engine is fantastic, although it is gradually being replaced by Maruti's new Z-Series engine. However, as long as it's still available, we should cherish it.

Variant Recommendation
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is offered in four variants. It has a single engine option with both AMT and manual transmission. According to us, if you are tight on budget and can get aftermarket accessories then the base Sigma variant is the right choice for you. You should stretch your budget for a better deal. It includes an AMT option. The Zeta variant has all the necessary features. Upgrading to the Alpha variant is not a worthy upgrade.

Expert Verdict on Ignis
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a great car on offer with a comfortable cabin, great interiors, and a refined petrol engine with superior fuel economy. It has been quite a long time since it received any updates or facelifts. It is a great car if you plan to modify it as the engine is mod friendly as well. Though it is an underrated product in the segment still it offers great value-for-money features at the price point it is offered.

Pros & Cons of Maruti Ignis
Should I buy the Ignis?
Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a great vehicle for a nuclear family. With great features, a refined engine, and decent fuel economy, it is a great all-round package. However, it is not doing great in sales and hasn't received any updates for quite a long time. Though there is great competition in the segment. If in case you are still not convinced about the Ignis, then you might check for TATA PUNCH or the HYUNDAI EXTER.
- The design of the Ignis is unique and has a muscular macho front face. The u-shaped LED DRLS with projector setup provides great illumination at night. The front face is lifted which provides an SUV stance to this hatchback.
- The 15” alloy wheels give great traction on the roads. The design is sleek and the black paint job gives a more aesthetically pleasing presence. It is a short car so yes space at the rear can be an issue. The C-pillar of the Ignis has a tiger claws-inspired design treatment that tries to improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Coming to the rear profile, the design of the Ignis is plain and basic. The taillamps are not LED which is a disadvantage. The boot space is decent and since the loading lib is quite high, stuffing luggage inside the boot can be a challenging task. Overall the aesthetics at the rear could have been improved.
Ignis body specifications:
Wheel Size | R15 |
Seating Capacity | 5 seaters |
Ground Clearance | 180 mm |
Boot Space | 260 liters |
- As we step inside the Ignis, it offers a great cabin space. The dual-tone treatment on the dashboard offers a sense of sophistication.
- In terms of features, it offers all the basic features that are required at this price point. The touchscreen infotainment is slick to operate and has an easy-to-use interface. The controls for automatic climate control are nicely done.
- The touch and feel of materials inside the cabin are decent. Though there are plenty of hard plastics, it does not feel cheap to touch. It certainly does require an update.
- The ambiance is well equipped with practicality, cup holders at the front with bottle holders in the door pad.
- The Maruti Suzuki Ignis comes equipped with a single-engine option only, the same unit that is offered in other sibling cars.
- It is a 1.2 L 4-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 90 BHP and 113 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT transmission. The clutch is light and in city condition, there won’t be an issue. AMT transmission is decent in performance but there are some lags and jerks that can be felt in the traffic situations.
- Since the vehicle has a frugal performance, its fuel economy is one of the best in the segment . In the city, it would certainly get 18-20 km/L. On highways, it can reach 22-25 km/L. Fuel efficiency depends on how you drive.
Ignis engine specifications:
Transmission | Manual & Automatic |
Mileage | 20.89 kmpl |
Engine | 1197 cc |
Power | 81.80 bhp @ 6000 rpm |
Torque | 113 Nm @ 4200 rpm |
Drive Train | FWD |
- The seat cushioning and leatherette upholstery provide a great cabin experience. They make the seating comfortable. Talking about the front seats, they offer a great commanding position along with a comfortable posture. The extended boilstrings provide great support.
- The rear seats of the Ignis are no less in providing comfort. Its wheelbase is shorter than the competition's. But, it still provides a very comfortable ride in the rear seats. The cabin is not wide enough so 3 passengers at the rear can be a tight fit. It even misses on a sunroof that could have increased a more roomy experience inside the cabin.
- The suspension setup of the Ignis is on the softer side. It performs great on potholes and provides a plush ride quality. At high speeds, it may be unstable and everything filters inside the cabin.
