Honda Elevate and Amaze: In a strategic move to offer more economical fuel alternatives, Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) has rolled out government-approved CNG retrofitment kits for its popular models - the Elevate SUV and the Amaze sedan. With this development, Honda aims to cater to the rising demand for fuel-efficient vehicles amidst the ongoing shift away from diesel powertrains in India. Honda Elevate and Amaze Retrofit CNG Kit

While Honda has traditionally stayed away from factory-fitted CNG solutions, this announcement marks a new direction for the brand. Instead of launching new CNG variants from the factory, HCIL has opted for dealer-level CNG kit installations, making it possible for customers to switch to a bi-fuel setup without needing a new variant altogether.

Unlike brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai, which offer dedicated factory-installed CNG models, Honda is offering retrofit kits certified by government authorities, similar to what Renault currently does and what Nissan is reportedly planning.

Available for Elevate and Amaze - But Not City

As of now, the retrofitment kits are being promoted for the third-generation Amaze sedan and the newly launched Elevate compact SUV. Surprisingly, Honda's popular sedan, the City has been left out of this CNG move, at least for now. It is unclear whether this omission is due to technical limitations, customer segment priorities, or simply a phased rollout strategy.

Another point worth noting is that these retrofit kits are not yet listed on Honda's official website, and official pricing remains under wraps. Buyers interested in the CNG option will likely have to enquire at select dealerships, where specially trained technicians will handle the installation process.

What to Expect from the Retrofitment Process

While a factory-fitted CNG setup typically provides seamless integration and warranty coverage, retrofit kits come with a few extra steps. These include documentation from the CNG kit provider for warranty and after-sales support, along with a slightly more complex registration process. The vehicles will first be registered as petrol-powered and later updated in the records as petrol-CNG bi-fuel models.

Moreover, since this is a retrofit route, questions remain around compatibility with existing vehicles. Honda has not yet confirmed if current Amaze or Elevate owners can get these kits installed, or if they are exclusively meant for new purchases.

Fuel Efficiency and Performance

Another aspect that Honda hasn't revealed yet is the expected fuel efficiency from these bi-fuel versions. Given that CNG is significantly cheaper than petrol, the running costs are bound to drop, but the exact mileage figures and performance metrics are still under wraps.

Verdict

By introducing retrofit CNG kits, Honda is attempting to bridge the gap in its powertrain options at a time when CNG is becoming increasingly popular in urban markets. While this move gives buyers more flexibility and a cheaper running cost, it also brings up questions about pricing transparency, availability, performance and support for existing vehicle owners. As more details emerge, this initiative could become a key differentiator for Honda, especially if executed well across its dealer network. Until then, buyers will need to visit dealerships directly for complete clarity.
