New-Gen Jeep Compass Not Coming To India - Why?
A recently published media report tells that Stellantis is not going to launch the new-gen Compass SUV in India. Earlier the new-gen model was scheduled for Indian debut in 2026 but now it has been called off. The reason behind it is said to be the lack of commercial viability of it. The new-gen Compass (codenamed J4U) was supposed to be based on the new STLA-M architecture. It is a platform that is destined for future Peugeot SUVs. to be sold in Malaysia, as well as different body styles including an electric Compass. However, the low sales volumes of Compass in India and Peugeot in Malaysia could not contribute to the break-even cost. Therefore, the J4U project has been terminated.
However, Jeep India's officials have claimed that the Stellantis group is committed to Indian consumers. As of now, Jeep India claims that the current model of Comapss will be kept on sale beyond 2026 as well. To do this, numerous changes and facelifts are awaited for the Compass. However, the cancellation of the new-gen model means no petrol engine option for Compass in India, even in the coming years.
As per the Stellantis, the development cost overshot 1.7 times what it was supposed to be. It is due to the multipurpose nature of the STLA-M platform. However, the company found that investing more and launching the new-gen Compass will not make sense. To prevent further losses, the decision has been called off to launch the new-gen model in India.

Verdict
The Compass has been the most-affordable Jeep vehicle in India since its launch. Offered with a powerful diesel engine, its driving dynamics and sheer build quality are the highlights. However, the limited service centers and spare part availability issue has been a black spot on its image that Jeep India couldn't rectify. Hence, low sales volumes.
