With its offerings for personal electric vehicles, Tata Motors has upped the ante in the electric vehicle segment. The recently introduced Tata Tiago EV was offered at an unbelievable bargain. Additionally, Tata Motors is doing well in India with sales of its Nexon EV and other ICE SUVs. At the moment, none of Tata Motors' SUVs are available with a 4WD or 4X4 drivetrain. It now appears that the company intends to include a 4WD drivetrain in its electric SUV.

The new generation of electric SUVs will include 4WD (4-wheel-drive), according to Sailesh Chandra, Business Head, Passenger Vehicle, Tata Motors, who recently spoke with a media organisation. By 2025, the company intends to add 10 additional electric vehicles to its inventory, a mix of new and existing models. In addition, some of them will have 4WD drivetrain.
Chandra responded when asked if its current lineup of SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, would have 4WD in the future, "It was difficult to justify investment as sales remained dismally low of such models in the domestic market."
Currently, Mahindra, the main rival of Tata Motors in the SUV market, offers 4WD in the Thar, Scorpio N, XUV700, and Alturas. The Grand Vitara, from rival Maruti Suzuki, has an all-wheel drive system. Tata will be able to draw in more customers with the future 4WD Tata SUVs and other electric vehicles.
