Volvo is on track to launch the flagship electric SUV by the end of the year. This could possibly the successor of the XC90 SUV, and the new flagship SUV will come with a proper name rather than merely another numerical code. The new SUV will most likely preserve the XC90's silhouette with some distinctive design details. A new grille, LED headlamps inspired by the Concept Recharge, and minor changes in other areas are expected.

The XC90 replacement will be built on Volvo's new SPA2 platform and will be a commercial version of the Concept Recharge. This improved version of the present vehicle's design will support both combustion and pure-electric powertrains. The 'SPA2' includes two distinct floor assemblies, one for hybrid vehicles like the then-rumored third-generation XC90 that runs partially on fossil fuel and the other for purely electric cars. Nonetheless, the electric XC90 is a significant step forward for Volvo as it introduces its own SPA2 architecture.
Volvo has been tight-lipped regarding the new car's engine options, but the company's aim to lower emissions throughout its lineup implies that all combustion types, whether mild hybrids or plug-in hybrids, will have some sort of electrification.
Volvo previously indicated that by 2025, all-electric cars will account for half of the company sales, with petrol-electric hybrids accounting for the balance. By 2030, it has said to solely offer electric automobiles.
The new XC90 might potentially come in mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. This lineup is identical to what is now available, and Volvo is expected to enhance the present car's look so that it may serve as a traditional alternative to the new flagship electric vehicle.

Late last year, the three-row SUV's powertrain was updated, with the 235hp 2.0-litre diesel engine being replaced with a new 300hp 2.0-litre mild-hybrid turbo-petrol engine. The XC90 is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, in addition to the new petrol engine. There is no word on when the new Volvo flagship SUV will arrive on Indian shores.
