Hyundai Exter Pros And Cons: A Worthy Upgrade Over Grand i10?

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dual dash camera, digital MID, and paddle shifters are not available with the Grand i10.
  • Comfortable ride quality, great fuel efficiency, and more space are perks of owning the Hyundai Exter.
  • Prices start at Rs 6.12 lakh, and the top model costs Rs 10.42 lakh ex-showroom.

The Hyundai Exter is a micro-SUV, which belongs to a niche segment, offering high ground clearance and a miniature SUV-like stance. The company's target audience was people opting for hatchbacks under Rs 7 to 8 lakhs, and it did put a dent in the sales of cars like the Hyundai Grand i10, previous generation Swift, and Renault Kiger. This is because it is roughly Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 more expensive than these cars, and offers a host of additional features. However, main rival are, the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite, and Citroen C3.

Let's check out its pros and cons and see if it makes sense over hatchbacks. So, without further ado, let's jump in, and don't forget to join the 91Wheels WhatsApp Channel to never miss informative content.

Pros of Hyundai Exter

Ground Clearance and SUV Stance

The price difference between the Hyundai Exter and the Grand i10 NIOS is just Rs 21,000 for the base variant. For that amount, you get 185mm ground clearance, along with more width (30mm) and height (110mm). However, the length is the same, but because of the height, it appears a lot bigger. So, this feels like a more practical choice for everyday driving. Higher ground clearance allows you to tackle rough terrains more confidently, and people who are 6 feet tall or above will feel more comfortable inside.

Features Rich

A dual dash camera, fully digital 10.67 cm MID, and paddle shifters make this a feature-rich micro SUV, with these segment-first features elevating its appeal. Other features such as the 8-inch HD infotainment display, automatic climate control, wireless charging pad, rear ac vents, and footwell lights further justify its price tag.

Twin-Cyclinder CNG option

Recently, Hyundai launched the CNG version of the Exter, featuring twin cylinders that maximise boot space, which is usually compromised by a single larger cylinder. This design choice provides more space, as the two smaller cylinders fit perfectly underneath. The exact figure for the amount of space isn't available, but I believe it would be close to 390 liters.

Additionally, the Exter CNG has an mileage of 27.1 km/kg, with power output of 69 PS and 95.2 Nm of torque.

Ride Quality

We are all familiar with Hyundai cars' ride quality, and the Exter is no exception. This vehicle is extremely easy to drive, and maneuvering it in tight spaces is a cakewalk. For long journeys, one can easily travel 200 km daily because the suspensions are tuned to the softer side. Additionally, the R15 tires absorb bumps like a sponge.

Mileage

Even if you opt for the 1.2L Kappa petrol engine, you'll get around 14 kmpl in city traffic and 19.4 kmpl on the highway, according to ARAI. These are tested figures; however, by driving with a light foot, achieving a mileage of around 21 kmpl is very easy. So, even without CNG, this car is high on efficiency. Plus, there are two transmissions on offer: a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT, with the AMT taking comfort to the next level.

Cons of Hyundai Exter

No Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Almost every manufacturer provides wireless connectivity features, except Hyundai. It's not just about the Exter - even the premium SUV Hyundai Creta doesn't have it. This is a disappointment because, on one hand, you have an 8-inch HD infotainment system and a digital MID, along with a wireless charging pad, but still no wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

No Split Folding Rear Seats

We know the boot space of the ICE Exter is 391 liters, but what if you're transporting a large item like a bicycle? You can't split-fold the seats to maximize space. This is a very important feature that the Hyundai Exter misses. Additionally, the front headrests remain unadjustable.

Verdict

Hyundai Exter is a great choice if you want a simple, affordable, efficient, and feature-loaded car. Also, considering it is an SUV makes it even more likable. For just Rs 20,000 more than the Grand i10, people can get more value and more features, making it a practical choice.
