Toyota Rumion Key Features Explained: Most Affordable 'Toyota' MPV!

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Toyota Rumion price starts at Rs. 10.44 lakhs
  • Rebadged Maruti Ertiga MPV
  • Rivals the Kia Carens, Renault Triber, and more

The Toyota Rumion MPV, based on the Maruti Ertiga is the most affordable MPV from the brand and undercuts its next in line, Innova by a big margin. While it has its proven track record somewhere else, it sure does add some aesthetic tweaks of its own. In this section, let's go over its key feature highlights that make the drives convenient. 1. 7-inch Infotainment Touchscreen

The Toyota Rumion gets a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen that takes care of the multimedia responsibilities, just like the Ertiga from where it has been sourced. It also comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is a nice touch.

Variant Available:
This screen is available with the G and V trims with prices starting from Rs. 11.60 lakhs onwards

Competitors With Same Features:

  • The Renault Triber comes with an 8-inch infotainment screen
  • Kia Carens offers bigger 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display.

2. 4 Airbags

Toyota Rumion MPV offers a 4-airbag system for the safety of its occupants. You get a dual front airbag as standard from the base trim onwards, however, the additional 2 airbags, the front seat side airbags join in only with the top-spec V variant.

Variant Available:
The 4-airbag set-up is available with just the top-spec V variant starting at Rs. 12.33 lakhs ex-showroom.

Competitors With Same Features:
Renault Triber offers 4 airbags with its top-spec RZX trim only

3. Paddle Shifters

The paddle shifter, obviously is available with only the AMT gearbox, adding to a more personalised driving experience. It enables the driver to give manual inputs to the gearbox whenever they feel necessary. This is a nifty addition to the Rumion MPV that is both practical and very convenient.

Variant Available:
Paddle shifters are available with the S and V trims, surprisingly omitted from the mid-spec G variant with prices starting at Rs. 11.94 lakhs

Competitors With Same Features:
Kia Carens offers paddle shifters from its Luxury Plus trim onwards

4. Toyota i-Connect Connected Car Tech

Taking the convenience a step further, you get Toyota i-Connected connected car tech with features such as Remote Check & Control (Climate Control, Lock/Unlock, Hazard Lights, Distance to Empty), Smart Watch & Hey Siri Voice Assistant Compatibility, Vehicle Safety & Security-Auto Collision Notification, Tow Alert, Find My Car, Valet profile, and more.

Variant Available:
The connected features are available in the top ranging G and V trims where the price starts at Rs. 11.60 lakhs onwards.

Competitors With Same Features:
Kia Carens offered next-gen Kia Connect with its Luxury trim onwards.

5. Hill-Hold Assist

A very essential safety feature for securing the vehicle on an incline is the hill-hold assist which auto holds the MPV on an incline without having to manually engage the brake pedals. Simply press the clutch and accelerate to go uphill without breaking a sweat and I am quite impressed with more and more models now offering this as a standard safety feature.

Variant Available:
It is available as standard across all variants of the Toyota Rumion with prices starting at Rs. 10.44 lakhs ex-showroom

Competitors With Same Features:

  • Renault Triber offers this feature as standard across all variants.
  • Kia Carens also offers it as standard across all variants.

Missing Features: Must-Haves In This Segment

1. Ventilated Seats

One feature that should now be given an essential status, something that I have been saying for quite some time, is the ventilated seats. The Indian summers are unforgiving and sometimes clocking north of 50 degrees in some places, call for this convenience feature that not only offers a pleasant experience but also keeps your clothes in mint condition for that urgent meeting when you reach your destination

Competitors with this Feature: Kia Carens offers this functionality from its Luxury Plus trim onwards.

2. Wireless Charger

Who doesn't have a smartphone these days? (No offense, if you don't!) Another feature that I expected with the Rumion was a wireless charger, which is also, unfortunately, not available in any of the 3 variants of Toyota Rumion.

Competitors with this Feature:

  • Renault Kwid offers a wireless charger in its top-spec RXZ trim
  • Kia Carens also offers this feature from its Luxury Plus variant onwards

Verdict

For the price bracket, the Toyota Rumion offers a very practical choice for those looking for a family MPV that has decent performance, easy on pocket with ample of practical utility features. However, with some variants exceding Rs. 13 lakhs ex-showroom price, I expect to see a little improvement in the tech list with its next update.
