PROS

Good Space On Offer

The Toyota Rumion being a rebadged Ertiga continues to offer a good amount of interior space. It comes with a three-row seat configuration and all three rows offer good space in terms of legroom, headroom, and shoulder room. The space is one of the major USPs of the Rumion. The MPV comes with colour interior upholstery and roof liner that adds to the more airy cabin ambiance.

Competition Check: The Toyota Rumion competes with its rebadged version the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Another MPV that can be considered as a rival is the Renault Triber which offers removable third-row seats and better value for money but comes with a smaller engine.

Fuel-Efficient Petrol & CNG Engine Options

Rumion Engine

The Rumion comes with a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine producing 102 bhp of power and 136 Nm of peak torque. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. This engine is claimed to give a mileage of 20.51 kmpl with the MT gearbox and 20.11 kmpl with the AT gearbox. The Rumion also offers a 1.5-litre petrol+CNG engine producing 86 bhp of power and 121.5 Nm of peak torque. This engine comes with a single 5-speed manual transmission and offers a claimed economy of 26.11 km/kg.

Competition Check: The Ertiga is the only MPV in the same price range which comes with the same engine as Rumion and offers almost similar fuel efficiency.

Good Practical Storage Spaces on Offer

Rumion Storage

Being an MPV the Rumion offers good practical storage spaces in all three rows. The MPV offers cooled cup holders in the front center console and a 1-litre bottle holder in the door pads. The second-row doors also offer 1-litre bottle holders with map pockets and front seatback pockets are also available. Moving to the last row, the MPV offers two cup holders for the rear-row passengers. The MPV provides decent boot space with all three rows up, along with a concealed storage bin for extra storage. For additional space, the owner can fold the last-row seats, which have a 50:50 folding configuration.

Competition Check: The Renault Triber comes with removable third-row seating which makes it a bit more practical in terms of boot space.

Good Feature Segregation Than Ertiga

The Rumion is based on Ertiga but it offers better feature distribution. For instance, the Ertiga comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the ZXI+ variant, the Rumion offers this feature in two variants namely G & V. With this the Rumion offers good features even in the lower spec variant.

Competition Check: The Toyota Rumion's higher spec variants compete with some variants of the Citroen C3 Aircross in terms of pricing. The C3 Aircross offers a bigger screen and wireless connectivity in some of its variants.

Toyota's Hassle-Free Service & Ownership Experience

Toyota is known for offering a hassle-free ownership and service experience. With Toyota's reliable after-sales service and Maruti's reliable 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Rumion turns out to be a compelling choice if you are in the market to buy an MPV under Rs 15 lakh. Also, the Rumion comes with a standard 3-year and 1 lakh km warranty, whereas the Maruti Ertiga comes with 2 2-year and 40,000 km warranty.

CONS

Misses Out On Feel-Good Features

The top model of the Rumion is priced at Rs 13.73 lakh (ex-showroom) and it does not offer any feel-good features such as a 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, TPMS, curtain airbags, and a bigger touchscreen among other features.

Competition Check: Rivals like the KIA Carens offer some feel-good features in the mid-spec variant which is priced near the top-spec variant of the Toyota Rumion.

Only 1 CNG Variant

The Rumion is available in a single mid-spec S CNG variant whereas the Ertiga offers two CNG variants and one Tour M variant specifically for the fleet operators. The CNG options in Rumion are limited, so if you want a CNG option in a higher-spec variant, you need to choose the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.

Competition Check: The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga offers better value for money in terms of CNG engine options. The Ertiga CNG is available in 2 variants.

Underwhelming Performance On Highways

Toyota Rumion

The 1.5-litre petrol engine with 5-speed manual transmission in the Rumion is tuned for efficiency and it offers good performance in the city. On highways, this engine tends to feel a bit underperforming and it is not quick. It struggles at higher RPMs and that results in lower fuel efficiency numbers. The brand should have chosen a 6-speed manual transmission for improved highway performance.

Competition Check: Rivals like the KIA Carens offer better highway performance with its 3 engine options.

Overpriced As Compared To Maruti Ertiga

The Rumion is based on the Ertiga, it offers the same features, almost the same design, same engine options yet boasts a premium price tag. The Rumion starts at Rs 10.44 lakh (ex-showroom), whereas the Ertiga starts at Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom). The price difference in the base variant is Rs 1.75 lakh.

Verdict

The badge engineering has worked well for both Toyota and Maruti Suzuki but the Rumion seems to be an overpriced product. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga offers better variant options and at an affordable price point as compared to the Rumion. The Rumion holds an edge of offering better warranty only.
