The partnership between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota in India has resulted in several badge-engineered products shared between these two carmakers. In the compact MPV segment, the Toyota Rumion takes the baton of this partnership. It is based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and gets a tweaked front profile and minor changes in the cabin.
The 'almost similar' Kia Carens challenges Rumion and Ertiga in the compact MPV space. The latter has brought an essence of luxury with its extensive list of features and powertrain options. Here's how the Toyota Rumion fares against the Ertiga and Carens, and we find out if it is worth buying. Toyota Rumion vs Rivals: Price
Despite being almost the same as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in every sense, the Toyota Rumion is pricier than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga compared to variant-to-variant. Also, while the Ertiga gets an automatic version for the top-spec variant, the Rumion doesn't. The Kia Carens has the most premium pricing in this comparison, but it is justified with its more premium turbo-petrol engine option and better equipment list.
Model | Toyota Rumion | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | Kia Carens |
Price (ex-showroom, Delhi) | Rs 10.44 lakh Rs 13.00 lakh | Rs 8.69 lakh Rs 13.03 lakh | Rs 10.52 lakh Rs 19.44 lakh |
Toyota Rumion Vs Rivals: Engine And Mileage
As a badge-engineered version, the Toyota Rumion shares its 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with two transmission options, which understandably claims the same power, torque, and fuel-efficiency figures as the Ertiga. Meanwhile, the Kia Carens is being offered with both 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated and turbocharged petrol engine options, with both claiming better performance outputs than the Rumion and Ertiga.

Toyota Rumion vs Rivals: Dimensions and Road Presence
Since the Toyota Rumion gets restyled bumpers, it is marginally longer than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, on which it is based. However, both MPVs have identical width, height, wheelbase, ground clearance, and boot space. In all dimensions, the Kia Carens has an advantage, giving it a better road presence and space than the Rumion and Ertiga.
Except for a restyled front fascia with a different grille and fog lamp housings, the overall appearance of the Toyota Rumion is very similar to that of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Both these MPVs have halogen projector headlamps and 15-inch machined alloy wheels. On the other hand, the Kia Carens certainly looks more upmarket, with split all-LED headlamps and slightly larger 16-inch machined alloy wheels in the higher variants.
Dimensions | Toyota Rumion | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | Kia Carens |

Toyota Rumion vs Rivals: Features
While the Toyota Rumion evenly matches the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in terms of features, it falls behind the Kia Carens, which has a much more expansive equipment list with many exclusive features like a sunroof, powered driver's seat, wireless charger, ventilated front seats, full-TFT instrument console, premium BOSE sound system, rear seat entertainment package, air purifier, and more.

Verdict
Except for a tweaked front profile, there is not much in the Toyota Rumion that differentiates it from the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, a badge-engineered version. Adding to this, it carries a significant premium over Ertiga while offering the same package, thus making it seem like a lesser value proposition than Ertiga. However, many buyers would like to buy a similar product but with the coveted Toyota badges. In contrast, the Kia Carens has blown out this badge-engineered duo in almost every parameter the powertrain options or the space and features.
