A mild-hybrid prototype version of the Vitpilen was showcased at the EICMA 2021. It is most likely to be produced for Asian countries.
Mild-hybrid motorcycles have never been a cause of pursuit as such, until now. Vitesco Technology, showcased their first prototype two-wheeler a mild-hybrid Vitpilen 401- at the 2021 EICMA. The brand primarily specializes in electric drivetrains for four-wheel drive. With this prototype, it is trying to adapt its innovations into motorcycles as well.
Aside from the fact, that the 390 cc IC engine already produces 44 hp and 27.3 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor is touted to add 20 more horsepower. This bump in power will also come with additional fuel savings, because of its electric powertrain. However, the firm is still working on the mechanism for seamless transmission between the two powertrains.
Currently, the Vitesco Vitpilen comes equipped with an alternator and a generator actuator. A belt driver connects the 48-V motor to the final drive. Thus, the demo bike has a shorter riding distance and is on electric power only. Vitesco Technology is working on a mechanism that will activate and support the internal combustion engine. This automated transition will not only bump the combined power output but will also increase its petrol mileage of 85 mpg.

However, Vitesco Technology does have other system solutions for their 48-volt electric drives in the two-wheeler segment. These units will have a power spectrum that ranges between 3 to 7 kW, a number equivalent to the engine displacement of a 150 cc engine. So, by that nature, the 48-volt powertrain is important for the firm, and chances are those versions might launch in India as well.
With respect to its potential target markets, India figures high on the list. For, Torsten Bellon, the head of the non-automotive product line at Vitesco Technologies has observed, Electrification is progressing, particularly in Asia, where motorized two-wheelers are almost a necessity for many peoples everyday mobility. This trend is no longer limited to China, and the share of electric two-wheeled vehicles is increasing in countries such as India and Vietnam.

As far as the research and development with the Vitpilen 401 is concerned, the firm has swapped the mono-shock rear suspension for dual shock. The battery remains exposed, and the company is still looking for ways for neat integrations. And given the gain in its equipment list, its kerb weight should increase from 151 kg.
The development of this bike will also help Husqvarna stretch its leg further into this segment. Other contenders would include Kawasaki who has announced that they will be launching 10 mild-hybrid bikes until 2025. What do you think about mil-hybrid motorcycles?
