Five-Door Mahindra Thar Not A Dream Now; Launch In 2023?

In October 2020, Mahindra launched the iconic Thar and well, it became instantly popular in the Indian market. The popularity was such that in some cities the waiting period is for a year. Yes, that's true. Now, new confirmation has come from Mahindra directly that they will launch the Thar in a five-door version and is expected to hit the Indian grounds in 2023.

Sharing the mechanical details first, the five-door version of the Mahindra Thar will pack in the same 2.0-litre, mStallion petrol motor and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbocharged diesel unit. Currently, the petrol unit churns out 150 PS of power with a peak torque of 320 Nm while the oil burner makes 130 PS with 300 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines will be mated to a 6-speed manual as standard and an optional 6-speed automatic. Focusing on the practicality factor, we believe that the Thar five-door version will also be offered in a 2WD.

The 3-door version of the Thar has a seating capacity of 4 adults but it loses out on practicality for being a family car. It is best suited for two people on board and then the luggage they want to carry for a trip. The boot space is not much to carry the luggage of 4 adults and thus the 3-door version of the Thar is a failure. That's where the 5-door version will come in place.

Now, sharing about the dimensions of the new five-door version of the Thar then the length and wheelbase will be increased to accommodate a roomier cabin. Currently, the 3-door version of the Thar measures 3985 mm in length and the wheelbase sticks to 2450 mm.

Feature-wise, the 5-door version will include rear power windows, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, push-button start/stop and among several other features. For those asking if the 5-door version will get a convertible setup then we don't think Mahindra will bring in this version however, the hardtop versions might be available with a removable option.

As far as the prices are concerned then the current 3-door version of the Thar retails from Rs 12.12 lakh to Rs 14.17 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. We believe that the five-door version of the Mahindra Thar will be a lakh premium over its three-door counterpart.
