Following the introduction of the Bajaj-built Triumph Scrambler 400 X in India, another model on the same platform has been spotted, bearing a strong resemblance to the larger Thruxton 1200. This new bike shares underpinnings with the smaller Triumph Speed 400. When the Bajaj-Triumph duo initially announced the 400cc platform, speculations emerged about potential future models, including a Thruxton 400 Cafe Racer.
While the company has already launched the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, the recent sighting of the Thruxton 400 undergoing testing adds fuel to the excitement surrounding this anticipated addition to the lineup.
Cafe Racer Triumph Thruxton 400 Spotted
The recently spotted Triumph Thruxton 400, based on the Speed 400 platform, retains several elements from its sibling, the Speed 400, such as the wheels, bar-end mirrors, round LED headlight, and teardrop-shaped fuel tank. Notably, the test mule showcases distinct features indicative of its Speed 400 lineage, including the upswept exhaust muffler and a 17-inch front wheel.

Distinguishing itself from the Speed model, the Thruxton 400 features a cafe racer front cowl, more aggressively positioned footpegs, a minimalist rear LED taillamp and indicators that have been repositioned lower on the USD fork to accommodate the fairing. This blend of classic and sporty design elements adds to the intrigue surrounding the anticipated Thruxton 400 Cafe Racer.
Examining the recent spy shots of the Triumph Thruxton 400, it's evident that the single-piece seat remains consistent with the one found on the Speed 400. However, the pillion grab rail stands out with a more squared appearance compared to the rounded design on the Roadster variant. Additionally, the test mule is equipped with Pirelli Rosso 3 tires, the same compound used by the international Speed 400 model, although for the Indian market, locally sourced MRF or Apollo rubber might be employed.
Powertrain And Underpinnings
In terms of the powertrain, the upcoming Thruxton 400 will mirror the Speed 400, housing a 398.15cc single-cylinder DOHC liquid-cooled 4V engine. This powerplant delivers a peak power of 39.5 bhp at 8,000 RPM and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 RPM. The ride-by-wire throttle, slip and assist clutch, a 6-speed gearbox, and other features will be part of the package.
The Triumph Thruxton 400 shares its front suspension setup with the Speed 400, featuring USD front forks; however, this test mule exhibited a black finish instead of the gold seen on the roadster. Elements such as radiator positioning, exhaust routing, and the end can closely resemble those of the Speed 400. Notably, the Thruxton 400 distinguishes itself with clip-on handlebars.
The test mule of the Triumph Thruxton 400 appears to be in an advanced stage of development, suggesting that the basic motorcycle is already well-established. Given these factors, it is anticipated that the Bajaj-Triumph duo could potentially launch the Thruxton 400 by mid-2024.
