2023 Mahindra Thar 4X2: Exterior and Interior Changes
To begin with, there will be no major changes to the upcoming Thar 4X2 and the overall stance as well as appeal of the SUV will be maintained. The boxy design, round headlamps, high ground clearance and chunky tyres continue to be part of the package. Having a closer look at the SUV reveals that it misses out on a 4X4 badging as well as the engine badge (mHawk 130/ Stallion 150) on the front fenders. Everything else remains the same and the Thar 4X2 gets the identical 18-inch alloy wheels, shod with 255-section all-terrain tyres. So this essentially means that the rugged and macho stance of the SUV, which is highly admired by customers will remain the same as the regular Thar. One important point to note here is that the SUV in pictures is a hard top version and Mahindra could possibly also introduce the soft top option as well.
Coming to the interiors, the overall dashboard layout and the seating configuration remains the same as the regular Thar. The 4WD gear shift lever is replaced by a cubby hole, and the few aircraft-style buttons are assigned new functions. Along with this, a new auto-start-stop system control has also been included in the package.
2023 Mahindra Thar 4X2: Powertrain, Engine Specs and Suspension Setup
The Mahindra Thar 4X2 will be powered by the 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, which is a direct lift-off from the XUV300. The power output will be identical at 115 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. The power will be channelled to the rear wheels via the option of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. While it remains to be seen whether the SUV gets the 6-speed AMT unit or Mahindra plans to introduce a new torque AT with the 1.5 diesel engine. Another interesting point to note here is that the Thar 4X2 diesel will be using the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) as per the owner's manual. This could be due to the new stricter BS6 Phase 2 emission norms kicking in, which requires DEF for smaller capacity diesel engines as well.
The affordable Thar will also get the option of a familiar 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine putting out 150 bhp and 300 (MT)/320 (AT) Nm of peak torque. It will also come with the option of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The Thar 4X2 will continue with the same suspension setup, however, there will most likely be some alterations to the tuning, in order to adapt to the reduced weight. Also, the vehicle is not targeted for proper off-road use, so some minor tweaks to the suspension will possibly be there.

Verdict: Introducing Thar 4X2 is a smart move by Mahindra as it will help to capture a larger market share. The SUV can become a preferred choice for customers who are not looking for proper off-roading capabilities and just need a rugged ladder frame SUV along with an appealing stance. It will also open doors for budget buyers to consider the Thar 4X2 as an option, and offering both diesel and petrol engines, will provide further leverage to the customers.
