KTM 990 Adventure Rally: What To Expect?
Multiple test motorcycles spotted recently came into the limelight. The suspected 990 Adventure test mules raised eyebrows globally as KTM plans on introducing the 990 once again. It was back in 2013 when KTM stopped the 990 Adventure production. However, it is all set to make a comeback. The spotted bikes hint toward a Rally format. With the upright riding posture and long front section, the test bikes appear to be almost ready.
Look closely, and one can easily spot that these are Rally bikes. How so? The front section is elongated with a large windscreen and a long-travel USD suspension. Additionally, the large 21-inch spoke rims with block-pattern tyres are used for a hardcore purpose. The fuel tank is split into two halves like a proper Rally bike and the cooling system is also reworked with a bigger radiator and two fans.
Feature-wise, the test bikes are seen with a large vertical TFT screen. The screen that was spotted, displayed 'Street' mode. This indicates that the 990 Adventure will get riding modes and other crucial features like traction control, ABS modes, etc. We assume that Bluetooth connectivity with multiple functions including navigation will also be offered.
Engine & Hardware Details
Since the bikes are undergoing testing, the front design has a round headlight with a covered cowl area. This will be replaced with an LED setup going forward. Overall, the test bikes are equipped with hardcore hardware like block-pattern tyres and a new subframe. We suspect that the chassis will be carried forward from the 890 Adventure bike but with a reworked subframe and dynamics.
KTM will probably use the engine sourced from its 990 Duke. The LC8 947cc parallel-twin engine is a tried and tested unit globally. It produces a max power output of 121bhp and 103Nm of peak torque. The Adventure will get identical power outputs but the ECU will be re-tuned for better off-road ridability.
The new 990 Adventure can possibly debut by the first half of 2025 in select global markets. Considering the fact that the Indian premium ADV segment has evolved with rivals like Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE, KTM might launch it in India as well. If so, it'll be priced at around Rs 14 lakh.

Verdict
The adventure motorcycle segment has evolved in India recently. It is the new product launches that has suddenly taken over the Indian market. However, there is still a long way to achieve what the European markets have been doing for years. Bikes like 990 Adventure can surely help in this change.
