Mahindra Thar 5 Door Major Details Leaked
Prior to its launch, some online sources have unveiled intriguing details regarding the forthcoming Thar 5 Door. The company aims to meticulously strategize its product positioning to broaden its sales reach and cater to a diverse demographic. In this context, the drivetrain of the 5-Door Thar holds significant importance in the variant lineup and its corresponding pricing structure.
Mahindra is taking a different approach with the upcoming Thar 5 door. Unlike the current 3-door Thar which offers both 4WD and 2WD options, initial reports suggest the extra-doored version will be a strictly off-road focused vehicle launching exclusively with a 4WD drivetrain. This aligns with the Thar's reputation for conquering tough terrain.
However, Mahindra might not completely abandon the idea of a 2WD. Sources hint at a possible future launch of a rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant, potentially mirroring the success of the 2WD version of the 3-door Thar. This could cater to buyers who prioritize affordability or don't require the full off-road capability of the 4WD system.

Powertrain
Presently, Mahindra offers the 3-Door Thar with three engine options: the 1.5L Diesel, 2.0L Turbo Petrol, and 2.2L Diesel. It comes with two gearbox choices: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Drivetrain selections comprise 4X2 (RWD), 4X4 (AWD) without rear locking differential, and 4X4 (AWD) with rear locking differential.
The 2.0L Petrol, generating 150 bhp and 320 Nm, and the 2.2L Diesel, with 130 bhp and 300 Nm, will persist in powering the Thar door. There's potential for a slight performance boost, possibly nearing figures seen in the Scorpio. However, it is still unclear if the 1.5 litre diesel will be offered with this upcoming SUV.
Verdict
Thar 5 Door is a great counter to the practicality that the rivals in this segment are offering. Maruti Jimny and the upcoming Force Gurkha offer a much more family friendly form factor and that's where Mahindra is targeting. One thing that's sure is that the segment is sure to emit a lot more heat in near future.
