Citroen C3 X
The French automaker's entry-level hatchback boasts one of the best engines in its class. The C3 is a spacious hatchback that starts at Rs 6.16 lakh ex-showroom, making it an excellent option for first-time buyers. Given its proportions, it's fair to call it a micro-SUV, but kudos to the brand for not forcefully labeling it as such and sticking to the hatchback category. Recently, it received five major feature updates that were not previously available, including projector LED headlamps, retractable ORVMs, automatic climate control, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, and a new foldable key. From a driving perspective, it is well ahead of most cars in the same bracket.

Should I buy the C3 X?
The Citroen C3 provides a comfortable ride and a satisfactory range of features, although it may not offer the best in its segment. It boasts good ride quality and handling, along with a variety of customization options, a turbo petrol engine, and a smooth transmission. However, competing cars in this segment, such as the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, offer more premium features. If you prioritize standing out from the crowd, the Citroen C3 may be the choice for you. Yet, for those seeking long-term reliability and a robust sales and service network, the offerings from Hyundai and Tata might be preferable alternatives.
- The Citroen C3 is positioned as a mature hatchback with a sufficient amount of robustness. Officially marketed as a B-segment hatchback, the C3 offers an SUV-like attitude.
- The C3 boasts an unconventional yet appealing design, reminiscent of its larger counterpart, the C5, particularly from the front. This design language effectively grabs attention. Despite the absence of alloy wheels in the top-spec version, the C3 maintains an attractive profile, thanks to its 15-inch wheels adorned with 195mm wide tires. Sitting at an elevated height from the ground, the rear of the C3 features charming C-shaped taillights.
- Adding to its distinctive identity is the striking dual-tone color option, with an orange finish accentuating the roof, side mirrors, fog lamp housing, and side body cladding. While some may find this color scheme bold, it seamlessly aligns with the persona of certain individuals.
C3 X body specifications:
| Wheel Size | R15 |
| Seating Capacity | 5 seaters |
| Ground Clearance | 180 mm |
| Boot Space | 315 liters |

- The unconventional design theme evident on the exterior of the Citroen C3 carries over to the interior as well. This design approach, reminiscent of what was first seen in the Nexa Ignis, appeals to those who appreciate such experimental designs. In the 'Feel' version, the fascia adopts either an Anodized Grey or Anodized Orange theme, with the latter making a bold statement that many may find appealing. Stepping inside, one immediately senses a pleasant ambiance.
- The flat-bottom steering wheel boasts a suitable size and design, while elements like the air-conditioning vents add to the overall aesthetic appeal. Nevertheless, the Citroen C3 compensates with its practical and spacious interior. Ergonomics are well-executed, and visibility is excellent. Ample storage spaces, including generous door pads, enhance convenience. While the front seats offer comfort during extended drives, the non-adjustable headrests may not suit all owners.
- Entering the car is effortless, thanks to the elevated seating arrangement compared to other hatchbacks. The second row provides ample space, accommodating tall passengers comfortably, although the C3 feels more like a proper 4-seater than a 5.
-
The C3 is available with two petrol engine options in India. The first is a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 1198cc Puretech 82 engine, delivering a maximum power of 82 bhp and peak torque output of 115 Nm. These figures outshine the non-turbo engines of the Magnite and Kiger on paper. Despite being a 3-cylinder unit, the C3 impresses with its low NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels. The gearing is well-suited, providing ample low-end torque for navigating traffic and handling speed breakers effortlessly, even in 2nd gear. Additionally, the non-turbo C3 performs admirably in terms of outright acceleration.
-
The second petrol engine is a 1199cc Puretech 110 unit, generating 110 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque. These figures set a new benchmark in the segment and are sure to excite enthusiasts. The turbocharged engine delivers an extra dose of power across the rev range, with continuous torque flow and minimal turbo lag.
-
Both engines are paired with manual gearboxes, with the non-turbo unit equipped with a 5-speed transmission and the turbo variant featuring a 6-speed gearbox. The certified fuel efficiency stands at 19.8 kmpl for the Puretech 82 engine and 19.4 kmpl for the Puretech 110 unit. Currently, there is no automatic transmission available, but it may be expected with the facelift model in the future.
C3 X engine specifications:
| Transmission | Manual & Automatic |
| Mileage | 19.3 |
| Engine | 1198-1199 cc |
| Power | 109 bhp @ 5500-2500 rpm |

-
Many C3 buyers will either be transitioning from small hatchbacks or purchasing a car for the first time. Therefore, a comfortable ride is paramount, and fortunately, the C3 delivers in this aspect, which is also a hallmark of the brand. During our drive review, we encountered various road conditions to assess its comfort level thoroughly.
-
The C3 feels increasingly refined as speed rises, effortlessly tackling broken tarmac, sharp potholes, and smaller speed breakers. It's fair to say that the C3 offers the most comfortable ride in its segment. However, at higher speeds, considerable road and wind noise infiltrate the cabin, prompting the company to address this issue.
-
In addition to comfort, the Citroen C3 also satisfies driving enthusiasts. With limited body roll around curves and corners, and above-average steering feedback, the C3 handles adeptly. Our test route in Goa, known for its curves and hills, showcased the C3's responsiveness to driving inputs. Moreover, it proves nimble in congested urban traffic and maintains stability at triple-digit speeds, holding its line effectively.
