Price Comparison: Mercedes Benz E-Class VS BMW 5 Series

The all-new Mercedes E-Class starts at Rs 78.5 lakh ex-showroom for the E200 variant. The next variants are the E220d at Rs 81.5 lakh and the E450 at Rs 92.5 lakh. On the other hand, the BMW 5 Series is available in just one variant, the 530 Li M Sport, with an asking price of Rs 72.90 lakh.

Things have drastically changed since the previous generation of the BMW 5 Series, which used to offer both petrol and diesel engines, along with multiple variants such as the 520i, 530i, and 530d. Now, there is just one variant: the 530 Li M Sport. In contrast, Mercedes is ahead by providing several variants of the E-Class, and kudos to them for offering a diesel option in today's time.

Engine Options: Mercedes Benz E-Class VS BMW 5 Series

As mentioned above, Mercedes offers three engine options in the new E-Class, so let's start with it. The first is the M254, a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, and it is a 4-cylinder engine. It produces 204 Hp and 320 Nm of torque, with all that power sent to the front wheels via a 9G-Tronic gearbox. In terms of performance, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a limited top speed of 240 km/h.

Second engine option is diesel which comes with E220 d variant. Another 4 cyclinder turbocharged engine with a 48V hybrid system. This one puts out 197 Hp and 440 Nm of torque. Also, 0 to 100 km in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 238 km.

The last one is the most exciting, as it features an inline 6, 3000cc turbocharged petrol engine that sends power to all four wheels. In terms of power, it delivers 381 PS and 500 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The E 450 4MATIC is designed for those who love to drive their E-Class.

Now, on to the BMW 5 Series, which offers only one engine option: a 2.0L inline 4 turbocharged petrol engine that also receives additional support from 48-volt hybrid technology. In terms of performance metrics, it produces 258 HP and 400 Nm of torque. A great aspect of this vehicle is that it remains rear-wheel drive, and BMW hasn't compromised on the drivability factor.

Design of these two executive  sedans

Both vehicles have been competing in the same category since the late '80s when Mercedes launched the W124 E-Class, a top-class product of its time created in response to the ongoing global fuel crisis. Since then, the E-Class vs 5 Series rivalry has continued, and people are always interested in this battle to see which vehicle outperforms the other. However, from a design perspective, both cars are poles apart.

All New E-Class

The E-Class feels like a car for someone who spends most of their time in the rear seat. However, the 5 Series, even with its long wheelbase (LWB), feels like an enthusiast's favorite sedan, as the cuts and sharp lines across the body create the impression of a fast car. The latest 5 Series (G60) appears to be a smaller version of the 7 Series, and the LWB version, which is the standard configuration of this car, doesnt give off the vibe that an owner will be sitting in the back.

That's not the case with the E-Class, and its executive styling is likely the reason behind its massive success. This is why it is the highest-selling Mercedes-Benz model, not just in India but globally.

Verdict

On paper, the E-Class offers customers more options to choose from, and the new generation looks much better than the outgoing model. Buyers love variety and a range of options, even if they might not purchase the high-spec variant with all the features. Additionally, I personally feel that BMW's decision to omit the diesel variant is a big mistake, as the thrill of driving the 530d is unmatched, something that some high-end sports cars fail to replicate.
