In 2022, Oben Electric, an electric two-wheeler manufacturer based in Bengaluru, introduced its first electric motorcycle, the Rorr. Although the brand initially intended to release the motorcycle in the same year, a delay occurred due to the implementation of the AIS 156 safety standards. Now, in 2023, the brand has reworked the motorcycle to align with the new regulations and made it available to customers. Noteworthy alterations have been made to the battery pack, design, and various aspects of the bike. We recently had the opportunity to experience a ride on the updated Oben Rorr electric motorcycle, and the following are our initial impressions of the experience.

Design
The Oben Rorr Electric Motorcycle presents a blend of aesthetics and functionality. Its design includes a minimalistic, naked motorcycle appeal, offering a sleek and uncluttered appearance. The circular headlamp design with LED headlamps, along with a fresh headlamp cowl, serves as an eye-catching focal point. The side profile boasts striking new graphics that elevate the bike's overall visual appeal.
In the rear, a compact LED tail lamp adorns a raised rear section, enhancing both safety and style. Notably, the addition of a new tire hugger not only contributes to improved aesthetics but also emphasizes the bike's attention to detail and design refinement. The Oben Rorr Electric Motorcycle has now turned out as a well-thought-out and stylish electric ride.
Features
In terms of features, the Oben Rorr boasts a digital instrument cluster featuring a negative LCD colored display. This display provides all the pertinent information, but one drawback is its inability to show the battery percentage, instead using bars to indicate battery levels. Notably, it offers app-based telematics support, which provides comprehensive information about the motorcycle. Equipped with a physical SIM card, it enables telematics, allowing owners to access vehicle statistics, locate charging stations, and obtain other relevant details. However, it lacks the reverse mode, a feature commonly found in many electric two-wheelers. Furthermore, the motorcycle includes a combined braking system, enhancing braking performance.
Ride, Handling & Ergonomics
The Oben Rorr e-motorcycle offers a ride and handling experience with both commendable aspects and room for improvement. The ride quality falls in the decent range; however, it tends to lack the comfort levels one might desire. The stiffer suspension setup makes you feel the impact of potholes more acutely.
On the plus side, the ergonomics of the Rorr are well-conceived. The 810 mm seat height is bit high for short riders. The handlebar is easily reachable, promoting a bit sporty riding posture. However, the seat itself could use better cushioning, as it tends to be on the harder side. Additionally, during braking, the seat design may cause some forward sliding.
On the bright side, the motorcycle's handling is a standout feature. It maintains stability at high speeds and instills confidence while cornering, ensuring that the bike remains in control and holds its line effectively. But at lower speed the increased weight is something which you will feel.

Battery, Range & Performance
The Oben Rorr electric motorcycle comes with a 4.4kWh LFP battery pack, a notable component of its powertrain. While the motor output has come down to 8 kW from the previous 10 kW. The torque output is now at 52 Nm which was previously 62 Nm. The bike offers riders the choice of three distinct modes: Eco, City, and Havoc. In Eco mode, the initial acceleration is satisfactory, allowing riders to reach speeds up to 50 kmph. This mode optimizes the bike for maximum range. Transitioning to City mode raises the maximum speed to 70 kmph, and Havoc mode gives the full power potential, getting the bike to a top speed of 100 kmph.
However, there are some performance issues to consider. While the initial acceleration is good, Eco mode can feel a bit sluggish, particularly when reaching higher speeds. The mid-range performance, with speeds of 30-70 kmph, is notably quick, but the bike encounters some challenges in the high-range performance, particularly when aiming for its top speed of 100 kmph.
Regarding the claimed range, it has been adjusted from 200 km to 187 km IDC claimed. In Eco Mode, the real-world range is estimated at 120 km, but the bike can achieve 100-110 km in this mode. In Havoc mode, the claimed range is now 70 km. It's important to note that switching modes frequently and continous riding in Havoc mode can result in a significant drop in range. However, if you stick to a single mode during your ride, the battery's performance remains steady and doesn't exhibit sudden range reduction.

Charging
Oben has introduced a significant change in the charging setup for the Rorr electric motorcycle. The onboard charger has been replaced with a portable charger, offering increased flexibility to users. Additionally, the brand has launched a new 2.2 kW onboard fast charger, which can be conveniently installed at home or the office. This fast charger enables customers to recharge the Rorr from 0 to 80% in just 2 hours and achieve a full 0 to 100% charge in 2 hours and 30 minutes. Customers interested in this fast-charging option can acquire it for an additional cost of Rs 25,000.
For those who prefer using a 15Amp charger, the bike takes approximately 6-7 hours to complete a full charge. To enhance convenience, the Rorr comes with a portable charger that can be conveniently stored in the under-seat storage compartment.
Verdict
Initially, the Oben Rorr entered the market with an exceptionally competitive price of Rs 1 lakh. However, since then, the pricing of the electric motorcycle has seen a significant increase, and it is currently listed at Rs 1.5 lakh (Ex-showroom). The product has evolved, boasting improved quality and performance, yet there is still room for further enhancements. Operating in a fiercely competitive landscape, where electric two-wheeler manufacturers continuously introduce more competitive offerings, the Oben Rorr presents practical storage options, a decent range, and low running cost. It serves as an appealing choice for those considering the transition to an electric motorcycle, but it should be noted that these advantages are accompanied by a slightly high price tag.
