When Mahindra stated that the Scorpio N was aimed at the D segment, they meant it in terms of dimensions. In terms of size, the Scorpio N is a worthy rival to the segment's undisputed leader. While it is shorter in length, it is wider, taller, and has a longer wheelbase than the Fortuner.

In terms of the petrol engine on offer, the Scorpio N leads the Fortuner. Despite being down on displacement, the engine of Scorpio makes more power and torque, and by the virtue of being turbo petrol will be punchier too. Also, the slightly lower kerb weight of the Scorpio N results in better performance for the former.

Despite being down on displacement by a good 500-600cc, the Scorpio N diesel manages to hold its own in the power and torque figures when compared on paper with the Fortuner. Although given the track record of Mahindra diesel engines, real-world performance should be a lot closer than what the on-paper specs suggest.

In terms of pricing, the Scorpio N undercuts the leader of the D-segment SUVs by a substantial margin. However, when you compare the Scorpio N vs the Toyota Fortuner on paper and in real life, the former does begin to give the latter a run for its money.
