Honda Civic and CRV Discontinued as Greater Noida Plant Closes Down

Honda has announced ceasing of car manufacturing at Greater Noida factory after 23 years of operation. This means that Honda Civic and CRV are discontinued now. Honda will now focus on the lower end of the spectrum with their new facility at Tapukara in Rajashthan

The facility at Greater Noida was integrated in 1997 when Honda entered the Indian market. This facility not only served as a manufacturing unit for cars but it also served as a manufacturing unit for 2 wheelers as well as serving the head office for Honda's Indian Division.

While rest of the operations will continue as usual at the Greater Noida plant, car production-related operation shall move to the plant in Rajasthan. Since the plant in Rajasthan will have to be retooled for making the Civic and CRV, the dynamics of the market did not really encourage Honda to invest in doing so.

The Honda CRV was being sold at a price of 9 28.3 lakhs -929.5 lakhs (ex-showroom). It was a powered by a 2.0 litre SOHC naturally aspirated petrol engine that put out 152 BHP and 189 Nm of torque that was mated to 7 stepped Continuously Variable Transmission. The CRV also came with a 1.6 Turbocharged Diesel that came mated to a 9 speed automatic gearbox. However, this combination was discontinued once the BS6 norms kicked in.

The Honda Civic was being sold at a price tag of 918 for the entry level model and 922.45 lakhs for the range topping ZX Diesel. The Civic came with a 1.8 SOHC Naturally aspirated petrol engine that put 140 BHP and 174 Nm of torque mated to a Continue Variable Transmission. The Diesel Civic was powered by the same engine found in the CRV - A 1.6 Turbo Diesel that puts out 118 BHP and 300 Nm of torque.

Exorbitant pricing along with weak powertrain options led to people avoiding these two cars which in turn translated to poor sales. Thus it was only inevitable that these two cars would be discontinued.
