Hyundai recently updated the Verna with a facelift and it wasn't just the exterior changes but an overall one. Right from engines to slipping in new features and more. And recently the fuel economy for the new engines have been revealed as well. In this article, we compare the fuel economy of BS6 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz vs Honda City.

Before we proceed, the Hyundai Verna is offered in three engine options - two petrol and one diesel. The 1.5L petrol gets a naturally aspirated engine which makes 115 bhp which is same as the oil burner which gets a 1.5L unit as well. It also gets a more powerful turbo petrol unit which makes 118 bhp on tap and gets a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

It is true that the pre-lift version of Verna churned out more power but it is the newer 1.5l which is more refined and meets with the BS6 emission norms. Out of all three cars, it is the Verna which delivers more power that is 118 bhp from the turbo petrol unit. The 1.5L unit makes 115 bhp with 144 Nm of torque. The City comes at second with 117 bhp on tap followed by the least powerful Maruti Ciaz at 103 bhp.
When the fuel efficiency is covered then Maruti scores the top position with the Ciaz at 20.65 km/l for the manual and 20.04 for the auto. Second in line is the new Verna which delivers 17.7 from the 1.5L manual and 18.45 from the IVT gearbox. The 1.4L turbo petrol which comes with a 7-speed DCT gearbox returns 19.2 km/l making it highest in Verna lot. Honda City sticks at 18 km/l for the auto and 17.4 for the manual.

It is the 2020 Verna only that comes with a diesel engine among its segment. The 1.5L unit borrowed from the Creta makes 115 bhp with a good 250 Nm of torque. This unit delivers 25 km/l on the manual gearbox and 21.3 km/l for the 6-speed auto.

Maruti has discontinued their diesel engines for good but several reports said that if the demand persists then they might relaunch it soon. But 'that soon' will be late 2020 or early 2021! As far as the City is concerned then it is yet to be launched in its fifth-gen iteration. It is sure that it'll use 1.5L petrol but other than that, nothing is known. It remains to be seen if the fuel efficiency of City will be higher than Verna or not.
