Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Harrier - Which One to Pick?

Both the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Harrier are premium offerings, so which one is better?

Mahindra's new SUV is the new buzz in town. Few days after revealing the XUV700 price list, Mahindra witnessed record bookings for the first 25,000 units in just 57 minutes. A testament to how the XUV700 was the most anticipated and exciting launch for an SUV. The Tata Harrier, on the other hand, has been spearheading Tatas sales since its launch in 2019.  Recently, this mid-size SUV raked in sales figures close to 50,000 units, that no other SUV in Tatas portfolio could manage. Besides, the Harrier is built on the Land Rover Discovery platform, which also makes it more hardcore, reliable, and capable.

Both the mid-size SUVs mentioned above come packed to the brim with features like a panoramic sunroof, sleek LED DRLs, automatic climate control, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ABS with EBD, etc. However, there are a few crucial factors that make one more enticing than the other.

So, what are the causes? Lets find that out in our comparison review below:

Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Harrier -  Design and Dimension

The new XUV700 is based on the sW601 monocoque platform and is longer and wider than the XUV500. It measures 4695 mm long and has a wheelbase that is 2750 mm. This gives the XUV700 the benefit of both a  5-seat/7-seat configuration, unlike the Tata Harrier, which is only available with a 5-seat configuration. The dimensions and proportions of the XUV700 clearly resemble that of the XUV500. However, the front fascia is now more pronounced and sharper with the C-shaped DRLs. The chrome stripped grille now features Mahindras new logo design. On the side, the pop-out door handles look genuine and unique in their segment, and the shoulder-door lines will simultaneously remind you of the XUV500. The tailgate is made up of different compositions of plastic and its quite a sophisticated one at that.  All in all, the XUV700 does come across as a premium product, and the sheet metal looks expensive as well.

On the other hand, the Harrier features Tatas sharp Impact 2.0 design language with its iconic hexagonal elements (easily found on the grille). Just like the XUV700, the Harrier is also based on Land Rovers D8 monocoque platform also found in the Discovery Sport. The connection with the H5X concept is clearly visible, especially with the front fascia. The way the LED DRLs cum indicators slice right under the bonnet, and the headlight unit is pushed down to the bumpers emphasizes the quirky nature of the design. Theres also a distinct sportiness in the Harriers design, especially the way C-pillar meets with the sloping roofline and the rising window line. The rear is nicely bejeweled with a long dark crome-styled strip with the sleek taillamps on both sides adds to its premiumness. Similarly, the lower side body skirts add to the Harriers off-road image, which is further perpetuated by a 205 mm ground clearance (5 mm more than the XUV700).

Height (mm)17551706
Wheelbase(mm)27502741
Ground Clearance(mm)200205
Boot Space (liters)240 425

Verdict: Both the XUV700 and the Harrier are premium offerings. But from its exterior design, the XUV700 is more road-centric, while the Harrier is exactly the opposite with a build quality suited for off-road situations.

Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Harrier -  Specs

The Mahindra XUV700 gets the benefit of both petrol and diesel engines and a choice of a six-speed automatic or manual transmission. The base 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine produces a maximum of 200 Ps of power
@ 5000 rpm and 380 Nm of torque. Whereas, the 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine is available in three states of tune. The lowest of 155 Ps and 160 Nm of torque is available with the base MX trims. Whereas, in AX models the same engine with the 6MT produces 185 Ps and 420 Nm of torque. And with the 6-speed automatic transmission produces the same power but 450 Nm of torque.

The Tata Harrier on the other hand gets only one engine option for all its trims. The Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter diesel engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, and it produces 170 Ps and 350Nm of torque.

Both the SUVs come with driving modes in the form of Zip, Zap, Zoom and City, Eco, Sport. Mahindra keeps its name millennial-centric, whereas Tata makes it sound like a regular business. In addition, both the SUVs gets an active terrain management system, but on the Tata, its more about controlling the engine power and torque. The XUV700 does the same too but its upper trim is also available with an all-wheel drivetrain, and that makes a significant difference.

Summary: The Harrier is less versatile with just one diesel engine available, unlike the Mahindra that gets both petrol and diesel engine. Despite that, the 2021 Safari has an efficient powertrain that can easily cross any terrain.

Features

The Mahindra XUV700 comes loaded with features, starting with the base MX variant that gets an 8 touchscreen infotainment unit, and a 7 drivers console. From the AX3 variant onwards, all XUV700 SUVs are fitted with the 10.25 digital dashboard. The infotainment unit supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a standard 6-speaker sound system, which can be upgraded to a 12-speaker Sony sound system. The available AdrenoX connected car AI technology comes equipped with some 60 car features, along the lines of which you have features like, Pre-heat cabin, remote start/stop via smartphone/watch, and driver drowsiness detection are some of the few features that come packed in all XUV700 SUVs.

On the other hand, the Harrier comes with a semi-digital drivers console with a  7-inch TFT display, and its infotainment unit is an 8.8-inch touchscreen horizontally laid out. The unit supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Besides, both the Harrier and XUV700 get a sunroof, but unlike the XUV, its standard 4-speaker system is not that mesmerizing. However, the JBL sound system in the top models available with the top Harrier models is worth its recognition.

But Mahindra takes the cake here with a long list of safety features and semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The camera-based ADAS (Advanced Drivers Assistance System) gets your Lane-Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Auto-Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The top-model Harrier at best gets ESP, hill descent control, rollover mitigation, brake disc wiping, and traction control. Also, the Harrier gets dual airbags, whereas, the XUV700 comes with seven airbags, and on upper trims, it also gets curtain airbags, that extend all the way up to the third row.

Summary: The Harrier has an impressive feature list, but its not as extensive and technologically advanced as the one available with the XUV700.

Mahindra XUV700 vs Tata Harrier -  Price

The Tata Harrier is available in several trim levels with both automatic and manual transmission options, and dual-tone color options. The range starts from with the base XE model which has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs. 14,39,899, and the most expensive Harrier model is the XZA Plus Dark Edition with the automatic transmission option, which has a starting ex-showroom price from Rs. 21, 09,.399.

The XUV700 on the other hand is available with petrol and diesel engine options. The base diesel MX model starts from Rs. 12,99,000, and the base petrol MX trim starts from Rs. 12,49,000, ex-showroom price. Further down the line, theres the AX7 trim that comes with a luxury pack and standard all-wheel drive is available with an ex-showroom price of Rs 22,99,000 whereas, the Petrol counterpart starts from Rs. 21, 29,000.

Final Verdict

Both the XUV700 and Harrier, are important products for their respective manufacturers. While the Harrier is a clear departure from a regular Tata model and looks modern and posh on its part. The XUV700 ups the game, with its semi-autonomous driving features, and an even better features list. If a comparison based on the number of features available is made, then the XUV700 is a clear winner. But the Tata Harrier has a better SUV stance, with more ground clearance. But again, with no all-wheel drive on offer, the Harrier loses the edge here too, in front of the XUV700.
